Keynote: New Takes on High-Impact Practices (HIPs) to Assure Quality and Equity

Jillian Kinzie is Associate Director, Center for Postsecondary Research and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Institute, IU School of Education.

High-impact practices (HIPs), such as service-learning, undergraduate research, and internships, convey powerful educational benefits and provide students opportunities for applied learning desired by employers and important to society. Although institutions have invested in promoting HIPs, participation, satisfaction and levels of quality vary by racial identity groups and by HIP. This session uses an equity lens to discuss research on racially minoritized students’ experiences in HIPs and new takes on dimensions of quality. We will consider the implication of these factors in HIP design and instruction and to ensure high-quality experiences for all students, and particularly, minoritized students.

Bringing Validation Theory to the Contemporary English Classroom

This presentation will look at educational theorist Laura Rendón's "Validation Theory" and detail ways of incorporating it ideas into the contemporary English classroom. First popularized in the mid-1990's, Validation Theory sought to address concerns many first generation, low income students by deliberately creating a classroom environment that validated their role as learners and contributors. A short overview of the history of Validation Theory and its connection to social justice in education will be included - as well as an overview of specific practices for the classroom itself.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Audio Feedback

A holistic approach to feedback on written assignments in writing-intensive courses, audio feedback offers instructors a vital strategy to engage first-year students with a more comprehensive approach useful in today's digitally-connected world.  It provides faculty another tool to engage students with thinking about their writing in new ways.  Audio feedback can be styled for each individual student's needs, and helps faculty expand their reach into student's writing.

Integrating ePortfolio across a Curriculum: Lessons from the Classroom

While exposing students to ePortfolios in a single curricular or co-curricular experience can have high impact on their learning and development, the highest impact comes from students’ continual engagement with ePortfolios throughout their college pathways. But how do we expand ePortfolios beyond a single course or co-curricular context and integrate them across an entire program? In this session, a program director will share lessons learned from the experience of taking ePortfolios from being a capstone-based project to a foundational element of curriculum in the Philanthropic Studies B.A. degree program.

The Power of Community Partners to enhance student learning

In 2015, the TESM department and National FFA formed a partnership to incorporate students in the volunteer program for the National FFA Convention. This HIP, allows for students to get a hands on approach to learning about events. This program has expanded to involve more classes. The partnership was a key to the convention staying in Indianapolis through 2033.  

Linking Internship Reflections to LinkedIn

Students, especially those in the humanities, sometimes struggle to see the value of their skills from employers’ perspectives. This presentation focuses on using reflection in internship courses to help students present themselves well on professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, and to celebrate their internship accomplishments in a medium that can reach hundreds of potential employers.

Cultivating Global-Ready Graduates from the Start:  Internationalizing the First-Year Experience

This session will describe how IUPUI is introducing its freshmen and transfer students to global skillsets by integrating high-impact practices across the first-year experience. Part of a grant-funded collaboration with Ivy Tech Community College, and based on the premise that global learning needs to be equitably available to all, IUPUI is building a global learning foundation that starts with professional development to faculty and academic and career advisors, and ends with innovative courses that introduce students to global mindedness. The session will discuss how the project is resulting in exponential growth in the integration of high-impact global practices in the first-year experience and language courses at both institutions.

Virtual Exchange: How to Integrate Global Learning into Any Course

Whether it is because of a pandemic, cost, family responsibilities, or work, many students aren’t able to participate in a study abroad opportunity. This is where virtual exchange can help, which enables collaborations among students with peers in other countries through online technologies. During this presentation, tips for designing successful virtual exchanges no matter the course modality or subject area!  

Establishing Community in a Classroom through Social Presence

In designing a learner-centered asynchronous course, establishing a social connection with and among students has been one of the most challenging situations. Being intentional about my social presence in specific and learning activities through course design is helping me to more effectively have a stronger teaching presence, and is one that students engage with, while also building classroom community. Research shows that continuously engaging with students by providing direct feedback, as well as opportunities to interact with peers, help each other to learn. (Darby and Lane, 2019)

How (and Why) to Integrate Civic Engagement Across the Disciplines

Faculty in the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, and professional schools can create meaningful civic learning activities that deepen academic learning while preparing students for post-graduate careers and a lifetime of active citizenship. Learn how to integrate civic engagement opportunities into your in-person, online, and hybrid courses at all levels and across all academic disciplines. Dr. Bennion will present in-class and out-of-class activities that develop students’ civic knowledge, skills, attitudes, and identity. Examples will range from brief online assignments to multi-semester community-based research projects. Learn more about how community-engaged pedagogies can deepen students’ learning experience while reigniting your passion for teaching.

Towards Differentiation in the Computer Science Classroom

Differentiation in the classroom involves tailoring instruction to meet a diverse set of student needs.  Three areas that can be differentiated include:  what is being taught (curriculum), how it is being taught (methodology), and what students produce in order to demonstrate knowledge (assessment).  This presentation will focus on assignments designed to increase differentiation in the computer science classroom.
