Project Title:
Developing an Immersive Course in Tourism, Events, and Sport Management
Funding Level:

Abstract:
Over the last decade or so, educators have increasingly utilized experiential learning opportunities to link theories to real-world practices. Particularly, full-immersion courses such as study abroad programs, have been proved to have high lasting impacts on students learning. However, cost, perceptions of safety, and general hassle of traveling makes study abroad inaccessible to many students. I propose to design an inexpensive, convenient, low-risk, full-immersion course in Indianapolis. The course will be designed and implemented in collaboration with Tourism, Event, and Sport Management (TESM) organizations. The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to, (a) get familiar with Indianapolis’ leading organizations in TESM, (b) observe the behind-the-scenes operations of TESM, (c) apply their academic knowledge to a real-world project, and (d) add a standout experience to their e-portfolio. This course does not require any textbook, classroom lecture, homework, or exams. Projects and quizzes will be completed and assessed during the visits. The final week of the course will be spent on incorporating the experience into students’ e-portfolio. Due to the exciting, dynamic, and highly engaging nature of the course my hope is that it attracts students from other majors and reinforces TESM majors’ reputation as diverse, engaging, and dynamic.
