Project Title:
Game and Gaming Element Application to Transfusion Medicine Education
Funding Level:
$5884
Abstract:
The proposed project is the introduction of gamification via an escape room to a team-based learning session during Phase 1 Year 2, specifically the Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine session during the Cardiovascular and Hematology course. As learners evolve, curriculum needs to adapt to the needs of learners. Gamification has shown benefits in the classroom setting for learners. The enhancement will be integrated into sessions at all nine of the IUSM medical school campuses. The objectives and content will remain unchanged and align with the Pathology Competencies in Medical Education (PCME) national standards. Learners will partake in a one-hour escape room that utilizes puzzles, equations, and multiple-choice scavenger hunts. Through this session they will be exposed to various topics in transfusion medicine. Learners will receive an educational guide providing relevant resources for the escape room, their personal study, and clinical wards. Learners will be evaluated for retention of information at the end of the unit as well as four months after the session to analyze the effectiveness of the gamification intervention. If favorable outcomes are demonstrated, the session will be continued and there are opportunities to increase the utilization and various modes of game-based learning in the curriculum at IUSM.
