Project Title: The Advanced Training in Adolescent Health Seminar Project
Funding Level: $5,000
Abstract:
Health care for adolescents has become increasingly complex. Between 10 and 24 years of age, young people experience major biological, psychological, social and behavioral changes. While the majority of adolescents traverse these changes without issue, some do experience adverse outcomes like mental health challenges, substance abuse or unintended pregnancy. Many professionals who work with adolescents, however, are underprepared to deal with the diversity of the experiences they might encounter. Many international public health agencies now recognize the importance of interdisciplinary, collaborative and mentored training as a means to support the specialized expertise adolescent health care professionals need. Federally funded, year-long training programs are available, but are limited to only a handful of individuals at selected institutions per academic year. Using this federally funded model as a guide, this project is designed to provide advanced training in adolescent health as a formal course at IU School of Medicine, allowing both in-residence, as well as distance, learners to participate. CEG funds will support course development efforts in line with best pedagogical practices in graduate and interprofessional learning in a hybrid course model.
