Project Title: Designing an Online Version of a Graduate Poetry Writing Workshop
Funding Level: $2,500
Abstract:
Indiana University is developing a system-wide online M.A. in English, which will draw curriculum from each of the university’s campuses. This degree program will allow Indiana’s classroom teachers an avenue for acquiring crucial credits in their language arts content area which they will need to teach dual credit courses, and it will also attract interested students from outside the state. The course I’m proposing, W513 Graduate Poetry Writing, has never been taught online at IUPUI. Creative writing courses have traditionally been difficult to adapt from a face-to-face (F2F) to online format because they typically require much real-time interaction between instructor and students. My challenge is to create a lively, interactive online version of the course that will, in fact, be largely asynchronous. I’m confident that new technologies will allow me to replicate the intensity and warmth and challenge of my F2F version of the course in a new online format. The course will be open to IUPUI’s M.A. in English students as well as to those in the system-wide online M.A. program.
