Project Title: Interprofessional Grand Rounds: An Initial Step in the Development of an Interprofessional Curriculum for the Health Profession Schools

Abstract:
A multidisciplinary group of IUPUI faculty in the Indiana University Center for Interprofessional Health Education and Practice (CIPHEP) will design, implement, and evaluate Interprofessional Teaching Grand Rounds (IPTGR) as the first element of a comprehensive core interprofessional collaborative practice (core IPCP) curriculum for health professions students. Development of this first element includes explicitly overcoming the barriers of time, resources and attitudes, involved in coordinating nine different departments in six schools. The entire unit in which IPTGR will be situated will include two teaching grand rounds, one small group case study and one simulated team exercise. The goals of IPTGR will be to introduce students to: 1) similarities and differences in roles and responsibilities of various professionals; 2) basic concepts of interprofessional collaborative practice in individual and community health and health care; and 3) skills necessary to work effectively as part of a health care team. The target audience for IPTGR includes students admitted to IUPUI dentistry, nutrition and dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, physical therapy, public health, and social work educational occupational therapy, physician assistant, physical therapy, public health, and social work educational programs early in their professional training. A limited number of pre-professional undergraduate students at IUPUI who have declared their intent to apply for admission to one or more of these fields in the next academic year will also be invited to attend IPTGR.
