Applications are due by November 15, 2016 for the Reflection in SoTL Faculty Learning Community which will begin in January 2017 and continue through December 2017. The Reflection in SoTL FLC will explore the process of critical reflection and determine specific ways in which each faculty member will incorporate critical reflection in their teaching practices. This faculty learning community is co-sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching.

This three-session series is designed to train participants to communicate complex scientific topics more effectively to non-experts like patients, learners, lawmakers, and funders. This program is free and open to all IUSM and IUPUI faculty and graduate students.

The Curriculum Enhancement Grant (CEG) provides faculty with technical and instructional support, time, and funds to implement projects designed to improve student learning and successes at IUPUI and IUPU Columbus.  In addition, the grants seek to enhance the conversation about scholarly teaching on campus and increase the practice of the scholarship of teaching and learning.  The request for proposals is now available at http://ctl.iupui.edu/Programs/CEG.   The deadline for submitting 2017 CEG proposals is January 27, 2017 at 11:59 p.m., EST.

The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning seeks proposals from faculty teaching at universities across Indiana for the 2017 E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching. The symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine teaching excellence and the instructional strategies employed in various disciplines to encourage student learning. Proposals should address one of the following: efforts to improve student learning and engagement, evidence-based practices in teaching, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the innovative use of instructional technology, and initiatives that promote excellence in teaching. Proposals that have application to other disciplines are strongly encouraged. The 2017 E.C. Moore Symposium will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center on Friday, March 3, 2017. 

Proposals will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2016.

Most new faculty at large public universities enter the professoriate with training and support to conduct research, but few also enter with equivalent preparation and support for their teaching. The Early Career Teaching Academy provides a setting within which faculty members can create and develop a powerful teaching career, one that is rooted in evidence-based active learning strategies and high-impact educational practices, and designed to facilitate student success.

The academy convenes in two intensive sessions:  one full-day, and one half-day session. These sessions focus on the effective development and assessment of active learning teaching strategies suited to IUPUI’s diverse student body. By the second session, faculty are able to articulate the teaching strategies they plan to implement.

The next academy will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, February 10, 2017, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Click here for more information and to apply.  

In this hands-on workshop, Randy Newbrough and Nate Pairitz will provide an overview of Kaltura.  Kaltura is a video platform, similar to YouTube, that is available to all faculty and students in Canvas.  Kaltura offers a private space to upload and share videos within your Canvas course.  Faculty can easily share videos with students and likewise students can share videos with instructors or with the entire class.

Recording audio over a presentation does not have to be difficult. There are now options that allow easy and quick recordings to be created and shared with your students in Canvas. In this workshop, Kael Kanczuzewski will provide a demonstration of a few free options to instructors at IU including Office Mix, Kaltura Capturespace, and Adobe Presenter. Following the workshop, we will have laptops available for participants to try recording on their own and to address any questions. Feel free to bring your own laptop, but please note a couple of the applications will require installing software and may require administrator access.

During this face-to-face workshop participants will explore approaches to overcoming common challenges in developing rubrics, draft a rubric for an existing assignment, and learn how to embed rubrics in Canvas assignments.

This hands-on workshop requires participants bring an assignment or two for which they are interested in developing a new rubric or revising an existing rubric.  Participants will also learn how to manage rubrics in Canvas.

Creating assignments that align with and allow for the accurate assessment of learning objectives requires careful planning.  Such planning can help improve student understanding of your expectations, student achievement of your learning objectives, and can also set the stage for a smoother assessment process.  This webinar will review methods for designing or refining assignments to target specific objectives for communicating critical assignment components to students, and for scaffolding assignments to help students achieve intended learning outcomes.

Faculty and other educators need time and support to incorporate high impact practices, new pedagogies, or online experiences into their teaching strategies, curricula, or co-curricular offerings. Teaching and learning enhancement grants can provide faculty and staff with the support needed to develop new or redesign existing courses, programs, and other learning experiences. As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses over the coming academic year, faculty who teach these courses will want to ensure that their course assignments are designed and assessed in alignment with their course learning outcomes and IUPUI General Education Competency Domains.  This brown bag workshop will review the process of designing and assessing their assignments in allignment with those outcomes.

Turning Technologies recently rolled out TurningPoint Cloud, a new version of their student response system which now allows student to answer questions on wireless devices as well as through the standard physical clickers. In this session, representatives from Turning Technologies will be available for training on how to use TurningPoint Cloud. Come at anytime during this session and ask any questions you have; whether you are currently using TurningPoint or have an interest in using it in your classroom in the future.

As the semester winds down, take a quick break and come learn about some simple and quick ways to improve your Canvas site for the spring semester. Getting to know the ins and outs of Canvas can take some time. This face-to-face workshop will provide participants with simple tips to make their course easier to navigate, streamline communication, and provide clear expectations for students. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops so that they can enact some of these tips during the workshop under the guidance of CTL's IT consultants.

Learn how to use Canvas, IU's new Learning Management System, at your own pace or in a guided tutorial. The Center for Teaching and Learning, along with IT Training, offers a wide variety of workshops and webinars to help faculty set up Canvas sites for summer and fall semesters.

The CTL’s Certificate in College Teaching program provides IUPUI graduate teaching assistants (graders, recitation leaders, primary classroom or lab instructors, etc.) with the opportunity to develop and document the college teaching skills that are critical for a successful academic career. Structured to be completed in three semesters, the program requires participants to attend workshops and webinars, as well as facilitated discussions with other program participants. Participants will create the foundational components of a teaching portfolio, including sample course materials, teaching observation reports, and a preliminary teaching philosophy statement. To apply, interested teaching assistants need to submit an online application form, a C.V., a one-page letter of interest, and a letter of support from their advising faculty member. Please note, space in the CCT program is limited; only ten teaching assistants will be accepted into the new cohort. Applications should be thorough and prepared with care and will be reviewed carefully. The application system is now open and applications will be due by 11:59 p.m. on November 6, 2016. The CCT program is not a K-12 teacher licensing program and is non-credit bearing. As a result, it will not appear on participants’ transcripts; however, it can and should be listed on participants’ C.V.s.

Darla K. Deardorff, executive director of the Association of  International Education Administrators, will be the keynote speaker for  the 2016 William M. Plater Institute on the Future of Learning on  October 31st.  She will speak on the institute’s theme, “Global Learning:   Education for a Global Community.”  Dr. Deardorff is Executive Director of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), based at Duke University.  Click here for more information.

The Lifesaver Mental Health Mini-Series is offered so that students can gain more comprehensive information around mental health.  Various workshops cover topics such as an overview of mental health, illnesses and symptoms, ways to reduce stigma, how to help onself or a friend with illness, and understanding the importance of resilience. QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer, three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives.  To register for this workshop, click here.   

The RISE program will be hosting a pre-conference workshop for students on Thursday, November 3, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and a one-day conference, RISE Day 2016, on Friday, November 4, 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  RISE Day showcases the work of students, staff, and faculty who teach courses with an emphasis on high-impact teaching practices, as well as our work with community partners.  This year's focus is "Study Abroad and Other International Experiences."  This is something for everyone- faculty, staff, students, and community partners.  All are welcome to attend all or part of this one day conference.
