What is critical reflection and how can it lead to the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL)?
Critical reflection on teaching and learning is a process that can lead to many positive outcomes for both novice and experienced educators. It is a way to improve our teaching practices by questioning assumptions, observing our practices, acting upon our observations, and evaluating the consequences of our actions. Engaging in critical reflection can also serve as a catalyst for the design of scholarly activities that contribute to the academic community and strengthen the dossiers of faculty seeking promotion and/or tenure.
What is a Faculty Learning Community (FLC)?
A Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is an interdisciplinary group of faculty with a common interest. The primary purpose of an FLC is to explore a specific topic or theme as it relates to best practices in teaching and learning. This goal is achieved by providing a safe, supportive community wherein members can engage in research, scholarship of teaching and learning, and service to explore new approaches to learning?
What is the Reflection in SoTL FLC?
The Reflection in SoTL FLC will explore the process of critical reflection and determine specific ways in which each faculty member will incorporate critical reflection in their teaching practices. The Reflection in SoTL FLC will be active throughout 2017, and is intended to:
- Foster self-examination of teaching practices in a safe and supportive community
- Expose participants to theories and practices of reflective teaching
- Integrate the science of learning into the practice of teaching
- Support the integration of critical reflection into ongoing teaching practices
- Generate enthusiasm for scholarly teaching
- Develop and disseminate scholarly products resulting from the application of critical reflection
Stipend: Each participant in this Faculty Learning Community will receive $1,000.00 to be used for professional development related to reflection and scholarship.
