Project Title: Informed Consent in Medical Education, Overlooked No More: An Innovative Instructional Method Incorporating Critical Concepts in the Surgery Clerkship
Funding Level: $4,976
Abstract:
The Informed Consent, Overlooked No More: An Innovative Instructional Method Incorporating Critical Concepts project aims to fill a learning gap in the current clinical curriculum, one that is recognized by Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSOM) as being of global importance to medical education, but as yet is not formally taught. Rather, this education is provided by various faculty prior to procedures, or not at all. Thus, graduating medical students often enter training with this knowledge gap. This project aims to fill this learning gap by creating a self-directed, interactive learning tool that will reinforce the concepts of informed consent, including the purpose and description of the proposed intervention as well as the benefits, risks and alternatives. In a virtual patient care environment, the student will navigate among different surgeon-patient video interactions focused on procedural informed consent. The student will evaluate these exchanges for appropriateness with respect to the critical components of informed consent and, with identification of the missing or poorly performed portions of the interaction, the student will then observe the same encounter in its complete and appropriate form. This project allows for a cost-effective method with which to deliver a variety of experiences to the students independent of their clinical assignment during the Surgery Clerkship. Further, key IUSOM learning objectives including patient communication, education and safety will be met. The finished product of the project will be administered every.
