Project Title: Towards Quality: A Project to Systematically Develop Quality Matters Skills and Capacities for an Online Department
Funding Level: $14,986
Abstract:
A three-person faculty team from the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) requests funding to develop Quality Matters competencies and peer-training artifacts to help design and evaluate online courses. DLIS teaches graduate students online; however, the department recently developed an undergraduate minor and major in the broad area of "data studies," which will include online courses. The purpose of this request for funding is twofold: first, the team needs support to develop the three foundational, online courses; and, two, the team will use this opportunity to develop competencies in the use of Quality Matters to develop and evaluate online courses. Each team member will work with instructional technologists from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to learn the Quality Matters standards and pursue full Quality Matters certification to become peer reviewers for university-wide courses. Additionally, the team will use its Quality Matters competencies to build the three courses. These courses will undergo expert reviews (from CTL) and peer review (from team members) to align each course’s design with Quality Matters standards and gain IU-Quality Matters intermediate review certification. The team will use its gained expertise to develop a departmental workshop on Quality Matters and a Quality Matters-aligned Canvas course template for use by full-time and associate faculty.
