Project Title: CSCI 101: CS Principles – A Novel, On-line Learning Experience in Computing

Abstract:
The School of Science and the School of Engineering and Technology propose to collaboratively develop and offer a new online course entitled “CSCI 101: CS Principles”, modeled on a nationwide call to broaden participation in computing and computer science. The call to develop CS Principles is being led by a team of computer science educators organized by the College Board and the National Science Foundation. The curriculum of our proposed CS Principles course will have four specific characteristics: (1) Course content will meet NSF sponsored framework guidelines to broaden participation in Computer Science; (2) Course pedagogy will include the seven “Big Ideas” of Computer Science, implemented using Peer Led Student Learning methodology; (3) Course delivery mechanisms will be created and architected for online learning; and (4) Course assessment and benchmarking metrics will be consistent with other pilot CS Principles courses developed as part of the broader goal of our interdisciplinary team to submit a proposal to the NSF Computing Education for the 21st Century (CE 21) in Spring 2013 . This proposed project timeline includes a planning phase to be completed spring semester 2013, course development and unit pilots to be conducted during Summer 2013, and an initial course launch scheduled for Fall 2013, and a final project report in Spring 2014.
