Project Title: Facilitating Clinical Skills Learning in the Practice Area of Productive Aging for Doctoral Occupational Therapy Students: A Lab Workbook Development Project
Funding Level: $5,000
Abstract:
The common teaching interest of faculty in the healthcare professional programs is to prepare students to meet entry-to-practice competencies. Clinical skills labs are an important component in the curricula to provide students a safe and protected environment to practice clinical skills and achieve competency. Resources such as textbooks are often available for faculty members to prepare lecture content and for students to improve subject knowledge. However, educational materials to support and develop effective lab learning activities are often lacking. The proposed project will develop a lab workbook to support doctoral occupational therapy students' skill learning in the practice area of productive aging. Faculty investigators and occupational therapy practitioners will work together to contribute to the workbook content. The experiential learning and problem-based learning principles will be applied to develop lab learning activities. The project is expected to benefit students’ clinical reasoning, improve skill competency and confidence, as well as to increase students’ readiness for fieldwork.
