Project Title: Enhancing Online CS Courses through Data Mining for Personalized Intervention
Funding Level: $3,080
Abstract:
Department of Computer and Information Science routinely offers a number of online courses, among which CSCI N207 (Data Analysis with Spreadsheet) is of significant importance. This courses is one of IUPUI’s General Education Core, has large enrollment and a heterogeneous student demographic. Each semester, Canvas captures large amount of course data, including students’ online footprints such as quiz scores, logged entries and frequency of logins. Patterns discerned from this data can greatly help instructors gain insights over students learning behaviors. This project will use Data Mining and Machine Learning techniques to analyze students’ online footprint. From this, a software tool will be created to profile students, identifying those with declining performance, and make corrective recommendations to instructors. The goal of this project is to provide timely and personalized instructor intervention, which will ultimately improve students’ learning experience and enhance their learning outcomes.
