Project Title: Incorporation of BIM Technology into the Construction Engineering Management Technology Program Curriculum
Funding Level: $7,125
Abstract:
It has been well documented that the building construction industry is experiencing a gradual shift away from the printed two dimensional format of construction drawings (CD’s or “blueprints”) to a digital, three dimensional format that is layered with extensive metadata. The technology in which the three dimensional model is combined with data is generally referred to as Building Information Modeling (BIM). It is critical for academic programs whose graduates are seeking careers in the construction industry to be familiar with the latest construction technology. Currently the Construction Engineering Management Technology (CEMT) program does not incorporate BIM within its curriculum. After an extensive review of academic research and a comparison of plans of study offered through other construction management programs, it has been determined that the CEMT program is clearly deficient in this area. This grant proposal seeks to dedicate faculty and technical resources in the development of a BIM – based
curriculum that can be incorporated into the existing courses that reside within the current CEMT plan of study.
This enhancement will require the acquisition and installation of a dedicated software package, training in its application, development of an appropriate pedagogy for its instruction and ultimately integration into the CEMT curriculum. This technology will instruction and ultimately integration into the CEMT curriculum. This technology will provide many positive benefits to the CEMT program including enhancing students’ awareness of innovative technologies, introducing students to the latest in project management tools, increasing students’ receptivity to new methodologies and reinforcing traditional project management skills such as communication, presentation and collaboration. Additionally, the inclusion of BIM technology is a potential marketing opportunity as it is an attractive digital technology combining computers, laptops, and tablets with digital information and three-dimensional imagery.
