Many IU Indianapolis instructors teach courses using high-impact practices (HIPs), which have been shown to promote greater student engagement, active and deep learning, critical thinking, enhanced communication, problem-solving skills, and greater appreciation for diversity. The CTL, in collaboration with the Institute for Engaged Learning (IEL), offers the HIPs Course Design Institute (CDI), which is intended for instructors who currently use or want to implement one or more HIPs in their course(s). The 2019 institute will focus on HIPs in first-year experiences, specifically, project-based learning, global learning, learning communities, and ePortfolios.
Institute participants will use backwards course design and the relevant IU Indianapolis HIPs taxonomies to design, evaluate, and refine their current course(s) to integrate one or more HIPs, improve student learning outcomes, and promote equity and inclusion.
By the end of the institute, participants will be better prepared to:
- describe the elements of HIPs and the benefits of incorporating these in courses.
- employ backwards course design to develop or refine a course incorporating one or more HIPs.
- use the HIPs taxonomies to reflect on the quality of HIPs experiences and plan course revisions.
- incorporate inclusive and equitable teaching practices.
- continually collect evidence of student learning and use it to guide instructional practice.
The institute will take place in four, half-day workshop sessions over two weeks; participants will also have opportunities to meet one-on-one with CTL consultants and HIP experts from IEL. Participants are required to attend all sessions and will receive $500 in professional development funds upon successful creation of the following products:
- revised learner-centered syllabus
- revised assignment and associated grading criteria
- course alignment grid
- course revision plan
- pre- and post-course assessment using HIPs taxonomies
Participants will also be expected to complete a post-implementation reflection and to disseminate what they learned through the institute and their implementation (e.g., workshop, webinar, community of practice, etc.).
The 2019 institute will be held in Hine Hall 231 on the following dates:
- Monday, June 3: 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. (Lunch will be provided)
- Wednesday, June 5: 9 a.m. - noon
- Monday, June 10: 9 a.m. - noon
- Wednesday, June 12: 9 a.m. - noon
