Course Design for Transparency Institute
Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT) is a course design model that clearly and explicitly communicates course purposes, tasks, and criteria to students. Research shows that it enhances student confidence and belonging which leads to increased student learning and course completion. Start the fall semester with practical strategies to reduce DFWs and increase student retention! Applications are due on Monday, June 16.

Instructors want to be sure that they are assessing the products of student learning in courses, rather than the products of Generative AI. Well, as it turns out, many students also want to be sure that they are learning from teachers in the classroom, rather than learning from Generative AI Should instructors use Generative AI to create creating course materials, to grade student work, and to help communicate with students? This article helps us think about what is an appropriate use of Generative AI when it comes to the work of teaching.

Are you curious about how Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) can enhance your teaching and research, and support your promotion and/tenure efforts? Join the virtual Summer SoTL Journal Club, led by CTL’s SoTL Fellow Dr. Carol Hostetter, to explore SoTL literature in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting. Participants will engage in structured discussions, critical analysis, and reflections, focusing on an article each meeting. Participants will leave with ideas for their own SoTL study as well as ways to enhance their disciplinary research. Open to all IU campuses, those new to SoTL and experienced SoTL scholars are welcome to join!
Schedule:
- The Summer SoTL Journal Club will meet virtually on three Tuesdays - May 13, June 3, and June 17 - from 10 – 11 a.m.

- Access to the Assessment Institute: Journal club participants who attend all three meetings and submit their reflections will be eligible to receive 1 of 5 complimentary registration to the 2025 Assessment Institute. All participants will be eligible to receive the early bird registration rate for the conference. The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is the nation’s oldest and largest event focused on assessing and improving higher education and a fantastic venue for disseminating SoTL work.
- Opportunity for a conference presentation: Three to five participants will be invited to serve on a panel to share their journal club experiences and outcomes at the 2025 Assessment Institute!

- Articles for second and third meetings will be chosen based on registrants’ disciplines. Articles and an empty outline with discussion prompts will be shared with participants two weeks in advance.
About Carol Hostetter:
Carol Hostetter is Professor Emerita from the School of Social Work at Indiana University, having joined the faculty in 2001. She has won many teaching awards, including the top teaching award for all eight campuses of Indiana University. Dr. Hostetter has been a leader in Indiana University’s teaching academy, FACET (Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching) as well as in Indiana University’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) program. Her SOTL grants, presentations and publications focus on social presence in online courses, high-impact practices and learning analytics. Carol serves as CTL’s SoTL Fellow this summer.

Call for Proposals: 2025 ISETL Conference
|
The International Society for Exploring Teaching and Learning (ISETL) in partnership with LEAP Indiana invites educators, advisors, researchers, and practitioners to submit proposals for the 2025 conference. This year’s theme, “Tracks to Transformation: High-Impact Practices, Belonging, and the Journey of Learning,” encourages presentations exploring evidence-based strategies that foster student engagement, equitable learning environments, and a sense of belonging. Deadline for proposal submission is June 1. Learn more and submit a proposal.

When Done Well: Service Learning Institute and Faculty Learning Community
|
The When Done Well: Service Learning Institute is a faculty learning community (FLC) for those seeking to develop or improve an undergraduate Service Learning course during the 2025-2026 academic year. This Institute is open to faculty at IU Indianapolis, Columbus, or Fort Wayne who plan to teach an undergraduate Service Learning course during fall semester, 2025 or spring semester, 2026. Twenty applicants will be selected to participate. All participants selected will receive a $2,500.00 stipend (paid over the course of the FLC).
Please complete this application before 5 p.m., Friday, June 20, to receive full consideration. Applicants will be notified via email of their acceptance no later than Wednesday, June 25.
