2020 Scholarly Teaching Symposium – Call for Proposals
|
You and your students may have navigated many unprecedented teaching and learning challenges this year due to the pandemic. We invite you to submit a proposal for a short (10-minute) virtual presentation focused on what you learned about your own teaching practices and your impact on students’ learning during the pandemic. The goal of these presentations is to bring forth promising practices and enable our campus community to develop a common understanding of challenges and solutions in the changed teaching and learning circumstances. Proposals are due on August 31, 2020. View the call for proposals for more information.
The October 9th Scholarly Teaching Symposium is an annual half-day event that fosters a culture of scholarly teaching and supports the scholarship of teaching and learning. It provides faculty with a venue to share their promising teaching practices and disseminate results of scholarly teaching interventions, such as the work of the Curriculum Enhancement Grant awardees.

Register »Organizer(s): Jerry Daday and Presenter(s): Tom Hahn, Morgan Struder
Critical Reflection is a key tenet of all High Impact Practices that, when designed well, allows students to make meaning of their experiences in light of particular frames of reference (e.g., a course concept, disciplinary knowledge, skill, or value). This process not only helps students deepen their knowledge but also provides an opportunity to document their learning. In our time together, we will discuss key design principles and a helpful reflective framework, offer tips on designing reflection for distance-learning, and provide you with a helpful way to utilize reflection products as a means of learning assessment.

|
Friday, August 14 | 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Online Zoom
Register »Organizer(s): Douglas Jerolimov and Presenter(s): Douglas Jerolimov, Jeani Young
This workshop introduces faculty and staff to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and to the QM Process. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized quality assurance organization for online course design, and the QM Process is a faculty-led peer review process that uses the research-based standards (criteria) of the QM Rubric to certify online courses. Eventually, many online courses within the IU system will undergo the QM Process with the goal of achieving national QM recognition. Faculty may also use the QM Rubric as a guide to design online courses. And, for faculty who are interested, this course serves as a pre-requisite for QM's Peer Reviewer Course, which is a required course for faculty who seek certification as a QM Peer Reviewer, allowing them to participate in QM course reviews for courses created here at IU and at other universities.
The workshop is offered at IUPUI as a one-day synchronous Zoom workshop from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.with a one hour break for lunch. To receive the QM certificate of completion for this workshop, participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop.

Data & Drafts: Impacts of COVID-19 on population needs and housing equity
Which areas of Central Indiana have experienced an increase in calls for help? Which populations have experienced a higher increase in needs? What needs have increased the most? Which neighborhoods are most susceptible to housing instability as a result of COVID-19? On August 20, during our virtual presentation from 6-7:30 p.m., we will look at predicted eviction levels due to rising unemployment, as well as the amount of funding it would take to support renters who have lost their jobs. In March, SAVI created the Coronavirus Data Hub to help practitioners and policy makers during the COVID-19 public health crisis and to provide Central Indiana residents with data about the spread and effect of the virus. The Coronavirus Data Hub includes several dashboards, data, and maps about Indiana’s situation and its information is updated regularly. This event is made possible by the partnership of The Indianapolis Public Library, WFYI Public Media, and SAVI, with support from the Civic Switchboard and Sun King Brewing. Our friends at Sun King Brewing will be providing drawing prizes for early registrants and engaged participants, 21 years and older, during the event.
