2018 Curriculum Enhancement Grant Symposium
|
Held to honor and celebrate the successes of the 2017 Curriculum Enhancement Grant (CEG) awardees, the 2018 CEG Symposium will feature a keynote address titled Scholarly Teaching, SoTL, and Campus Conversations that Matter by Nancy Chick, director, Endeavor Foundation Center for Faculty Development, Rollins College, and co-editor, Teaching & Learning Inquiry, Journal of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
The purpose of the CEG initiative is to provide faculty with support, time, and resources to implement projects designed to improve student learning and success as well as to enhance the conversation about scholarly teaching on campus and increase the practice of the scholarship of teaching and learning. The 2019 CEG Request for Proposals will be available at the symposium. For more information on the CEG initiative, go to http://ctl.iupui.edu/programs/CEG.
Attending the CEG symposium is especially recommended to faculty who may be interested in submitting proposals for CEG funding in the future, but all faculty are encouraged to attend.

Join us for CUTS: Responding to Student Climate Concerns, an interactive performance which invites participants to think together about the many forces that can shape campus climate both positively and negatively. Using activities and facilitated discussion, participants will recognize the impacts of an 'isolated' bias incident on targeted learners, assess the ways they listen to others' stories about negative experiences, and share strategies for responding to concerns.
This program will be performed by the University of Michigan Center for Research on Teaching and Learning Theatre Program. This event is sponsored by the IU School of Medicine and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Tech Tip: NameCoach, the New Canvas-Integrated Tool

Now that your classes are settling into a rhythm, it's time to learn everyone's names and faces. There is a new Canvas-integrated tool that can help: NameCoach. NameCoach can help you learn the correct pronunciation of your students' names -- and also help them learn each other's names, so they have a greater sense of community and inclusion.
There are three main steps to the process:

Light boards (aka learning glass) are available for use in IU’s Faculty Media Production Spaces. This technology allows faculty members to face the camera while writing or drawing on a clear, lit surface. Have no fear, being able to write backwards is not a requirement! IUPUI’s Todd Shelton will talk about how he has used the light board technology for his online courses. He’ll also discuss student feedback and how easy it has been to put into practice.

Preparing for the Review of a General Education Course

As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses, course coordinators or faculty responsible for preparing course portfolios for review may have questions about the information and materials that need to go into the portfolios. This workshop will provide an overview of the course review process, a review of course portfolio requirements, the process for assembling and submitting the portfolio, and the rubric that will be used to review the course portfolios. Examples from existing course portfolios will be incorporated into the workshop. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

Join this webinar to learn how first year Spanish students explored various cities and countries virtually, using their smart phone and Google Street and Google Cardboard Apps. This allowed students to feel immersed in a real culture by walking down streets, viewing billboards and signs on the street, as well as seeing people going about their real daily lives. Students reported feeling more engaged and instructors felt the classes were more interactive and dynamic. Come and learn about the challenges and solutions to these challenges from two seasoned instructors.

The Polis Center at IUPUI is offering a series of free workshops to build data literacy skills and use the SAVI community information system as a resource. SAVI Training is a hands-on curriculum focused on data literacy from end to end. It features four groups of modules that teach one to ask the right questions, find the right data, find meaning in the data, and then use the data to make and communicate decisions. Register Now for the National Symposium on Universal Design in Instruction and Learning

Register now for the National Symposium on Universal Design in Instruction and Learning (NSUDIL). This event will be held November 16 - 17, 2018 in Columbus, Indiana. Keynote speakers will be Drs. Sheryl Burgstahler and Loui Lord Nelson, both of whom are experts in the field of Universal Design in Instruction and Learning.
The symposium will be comprised of two concurrent tracks, a Higher Education track and a Teacher Education track. We welcome proposals for either or both of the tracks and that align with any of the following themes:
- Universal Design for Instruction
- Universal Design for Learning
- Teaching all Learners
- Transparent Teaching
- Active Learning Environments
- Design Thinking in Teaching and Learning

Communicating Science Session 1: Connecting with your Audience

Back by popular demand! This three-session series is designed to train participants to communicate complex scientific topics more effectively to non-experts like patients, learners, lawmakers, and funders. This program is free and open to all IUSM and IUPUI faculty and graduate students.
The Communicating Science program is part of IU's affiliation with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, in partnership with the IU School of Medicine, IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning, IUPUI Department of Communication Studies, and the IUPUI School of Science.
All participants are asked to commit to the entire three workshop series, as each session builds upon the previous. The cohort will meet on October 18, October 25, and November 1. Please note: if you REGISTER for this event, you will be registered for all three sessions.

When students make comments that are micro-aggressive in the classroom, doing nothing is a damaging option. The ACTION framework can be a tool that is quickly retrieved by an instructor to organize thoughts and unpack the microaggression in a way that addresses the situation and cools down tension.
