Join us for CUTS: Responding to Student Climate Concerns, an interactive performance which invites participants to think together about the many forces that can shape campus climate both positively and negatively. Using activities and facilitated discussion, participants will recognize the impacts of an 'isolated' bias incident on targeted learners, assess the ways they listen to others' stories about negative experiences, and share strategies for responding to concerns.
This program will be performed by the University of Michigan Center for Research on Teaching and Learning Theatre Program. This event is sponsored by the IU School of Medicine and the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Are you interested in having online office hours? Holding class while you are out of town? Inviting a guest speaker from anywhere in the world? Have students record their group meetings or dialogues? Zoom might be just the tool for you. IU faculty, staff, and students can use Zoom, a video conferencing and online collaboration tool, to host meetings that anyone can join. In this workshop, we will learn how users access their account, schedule, manage and record meetings, as well as how to use Zoom as an effective conferencing tool.

Would you like to know more about how etexts can support student learning and engagement? Not only does the e-text platform provide a great savings for students and an assurance for faculty that all students have required material from the first day of the semester, but it also provides opportunities to encourage engagement and ensure students are reading. Faculty can make and share annotations on text, useful in asking deeper questions or providing additional context for passages in the book. Additionally, students can make their own notes and share them with others or tag a note as a question, which is then sent to the instructor to answer.

Preparing for the Review of a General Education Course

As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses, course coordinators or faculty responsible for preparing course portfolios for review may have questions about the information and materials that need to go into the portfolios. This workshop will provide an overview of the course review process, a review of course portfolio requirements, the process for assembling and submitting the portfolio, and the rubric that will be used to review the course portfolios. Examples from existing course portfolios will be incorporated into the workshop. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

Diversity and inclusion play an important role in promoting student learning. Today’s college students are increasingly diverse compared to prior generations. Traditional teaching strategies have also been shown to lead to lower academic achievement for underserved students compared to majority students even when differences in GPA and other factors are controlled for. By considering the diversity of the classroom and implementing equitable teaching strategies, instructors can increase student learning and sense of belonging for all students, not just those who are underserved. In this webinar, participants will learn how to leverage student diversity and incorporate inclusive teaching strategies in their classrooms. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

Faculty who seek to refine and promote their teaching efforts may document their work through the development of a teaching portfolio, a site where faculty engage in reflective practice to measure the effectiveness of, and to refine, their teaching practices. This webinar introduces faculty to the teaching portfolio and to the several interrelated tasks that yield the teaching portfolio's elements: developing a teaching philosophy, identifying specific teaching practices to explore, document, and to improve, situating identified teaching practices in appropriate context, and collecting and evaluating evidence of teaching and learning.

These writing groups provide encouragement, accountability, and a sense of community while requiring a negligible time investment. The Polis Center at IUPUI is offering a series of free workshops to build data literacy skills and use the SAVI community information system as a resource. SAVI Training is a hands-on curriculum focused on data literacy from end to end. It features four groups of modules that teach one to ask the right questions, find the right data, find meaning in the data, and then use the data to make and communicate decisions. Call for Proposals for the National Symposium on Universal Design in Instruction and Learning
|
The Call for Proposals deadline for the National Symposium on Universal Design in Instruction and Learning (NSUDIL) is August 30, 2018. This event will be held November 16 - 17, 2018 in Columbus, Indiana. Keynote speakers will be Drs. Sheryl Burgstahler and Loui Lord Nelson, both of whom are experts in the field of Universal Design in Instruction and Learning.
We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, and brief panel discussions.
The symposium will be comprised of two concurrent tracks, a Higher Education track and a Teacher Education track. We welcome proposals for either or both of the tracks and that align with any of the following themes:
- Universal Design for Instruction
- Universal Design for Learning
- Teaching all Learners
- Transparent Teaching
- Active Learning Environments
- Design Thinking in Teaching and Learning

Communicating Science Session 1: Connecting with your Audience

Back by popular demand! This three-session series is designed to train participants to communicate complex scientific topics more effectively to non-experts like patients, learners, lawmakers, and funders. This program is free and open to all IUSM and IUPUI faculty and graduate students.
The Communicating Science program is part of IU's affiliation with the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, in partnership with the IU School of Medicine, IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning, IUPUI Department of Communication Studies, and the IUPUI School of Science.
All participants are asked to commit to the entire three workshop series, as each session builds upon the previous. The cohort will meet on October 18, October 25, and November 1. Please note: if you REGISTER for this event, you will be registered for all three sessions.

The 23rd Annual Facet Associate Faculty and Lecturer Conference (FALCON) will take place on November 9-10, 2018, at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre. The theme is Successful Strategies for Student Engagement: Sometimes it’s the little things. Gwynn Mettetal, IU South Bend, Chancellor’s Professor of Psychology and Education and founding Director of the University Center for Excellence in Teaching, will give the Robin Hass-Birky Keynote.
