This event provides an opportunity to engage in forum-style conversations with your associate faculty colleagues and consultants at the Center for Teaching Learning (CTL) about teaching and technology challenges encountered in the classroom or online. The event will be held September 4, 2018, 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the University Library 0130 and registration for this event is now open.  Read more..

A syllabus is often the first impression that students form of a course, and it serves both faculty and student as a guide to and contract for the semester. A well-designed and personalized syllabus can help faculty set the proper tone while simultaneously helping them avoid having to repeatedly answer basic student questions about expectations, policies, and deadlines. By examining syllabi from various disciplines, this webinar will offer tips and considerations for effective syllabus design, show example syllabi, and include time for questions and discussion.

Are you new to teaching at IU? Join this webinar to learn about the instructional technologies that can help you get the semester off to a good start. Learn things such as how to get to know your students, address academic integrity, collect feedback from your students, and how to follow up with students who might be at risk.

The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the semester. It’s an opportunity to set learners’ expectations, establish a feeling of community, and give students a taste of course content. This webinar will focus on ideas and activities that instructors can use to get a course off to a great start, with time for questions and discussion.

This webinar is part of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s online mini-workshop series focused on foundational teaching skills, Teaching@IUPUI. Designed for new faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate students, and those looking for a refresher on good teaching practices, the webinars are short, with a brief presentation interspersed with opportunities for interaction and questions. Grounded in current research, the workshops address various teaching topics and provide participants with strategies and resources to make instruction more effective, efficient, and enjoyable. Sessions are scheduled with the time of semester in mind, to keep topics relevant for faculty needs at that time.

This event aligns with the Instructional Strategies (IS) competency for the IUSM Academy of Teaching Scholars program.

As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses, course coordinators or faculty responsible for preparing course portfolios for review may have questions about the information and materials that need to go into the portfolios. This workshop will provide an overview of the course review process, a review of course portfolio requirements, the process for assembling and submitting the portfolio, and the rubric that will be used to review the course portfolios. Examples from existing course portfolios will be incorporated into the workshop. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.  

Are you interested in having online office hours? Holding class while you are out of town? Inviting a guest speaker from anywhere in the world? Have students record their group meetings or dialogues? Zoom might be just the tool for you. IU faculty, staff, and students can use Zoom, a video conferencing and online collaboration tool, to host meetings that anyone can join. In this workshop, we will learn how users access their account, schedule, manage and record meetings, as well as how to use Zoom as an effective conferencing tool. 

This event aligns with the Instructional Technology (IT) competency for the IUSM Academy of Teaching Scholars program.

The Polis Center at IUPUI is offering a series of free workshops to build data literacy skills and use the SAVI community information system as a resource. SAVI Training is a hands-on curriculum focused on data literacy from end to end. It features four groups of modules that teach one to ask the right questions, find the right data, find meaning in the data, and then use the data to make and communicate decisions. The 23nd Annual Facet Associate Faculty and Lecturer Conference (FALCON) will take place on November 9-10, 2018, at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre. The theme is Successful Strategies for Student Engagement: Sometimes it’s the little things. Gwynn Mettetal, IU South Bend, Chancellor’s Professor of Psychology and Education and founding Director of the University Center for Excellence in Teaching, will give the Robin Hass-Birky Keynote. On Friday evening, a plenary will be given by Ange Cooksey, Senior Lecturer Humanities and Coordinator of the Philosophy Program.   Click here for FALCON 2018 Registration. 

There are a variety of ways faculty, staff, and administrators can enhance their knowledge and share their expertise in global and intercultural learning this year. The Office of International Affairs has a small fund available to offset a portion of the associated costs of these professional development opportunities.

Jordan, J. V., & Schwartz, H. L. (2018). Radical empathy in teaching. New Directions for Teaching and Learning, 153, 25-35. 

This article demonstrates how student engagement, student learning, and student satisfaction are all improved by incorporating radical empathy in course or mentor relationships. In addition, they argue, faculty engagement and success are enriched and improved by the practices outlined.
