Are you a new or returning associate faculty member at IUPUI or IUPUC? (Sometimes associate faculty are called part-time or adjunct faculty.) If so, you are invited to the Associate Faculty Teaching Forum.
This event provides an opportunity to engage in forum-style conversations with your associate faculty colleagues and consultants at the Center for Teaching Learning (CTL) about teaching and technology challenges encountered in the classroom or online. Diversity and inclusion play an important role in promoting student learning. Today’s college students are increasingly diverse compared to prior generations. Traditional teaching strategies have also been shown to lead to lower academic achievement for under-served students compared to majority students even when differences in GPA and other factors are controlled for. By considering the diversity of the classroom and implementing equitable teaching strategies, instructors can increase student learning and sense of belonging for all students, not just those who are under-served. In this webinar, participants will learn how to leverage student diversity and incorporate inclusive teaching strategies in their classrooms. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

A syllabus is often the first impression that students form of a course, and it serves both faculty and student as a guide to and contract for the semester. A well-designed and personalized syllabus can help faculty set the proper tone while simultaneously helping them avoid having to repeatedly answer basic student questions about expectations, policies, and deadlines. By examining syllabi from various disciplines, this webinar will offer tips and considerations for effective syllabus design, show example syllabi, and include time for questions and discussion.

The first day of class sets the tone for the rest of the semester. It’s an opportunity to set learners’ expectations, establish a feeling of community, and give students a taste of course content. This webinar will focus on ideas and activities that instructors can use to get a course off to a great start, with time for questions and discussion.
This webinar is part of the Center for Teaching and Learning’s online mini-workshop series focused on foundational teaching skills, Teaching@IUPUI. Designed for new faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate students, and those looking for a refresher on good teaching practices, the webinars are short, with a brief presentation interspersed with opportunities for interaction and questions. Grounded in current research, the workshops address various teaching topics and provide participants with strategies and resources to make instruction more effective, efficient, and enjoyable. Sessions are scheduled with the time of semester in mind, to keep topics relevant for faculty needs at that time.

Preparing for the Review of a General Education Course

As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses, course coordinators or faculty responsible for preparing course portfolios for review may have questions about the information and materials that need to go into the portfolios. This workshop will provide an overview of the course review process, a review of course portfolio requirements, the process for assembling and submitting the portfolio, and the rubric that will be used to review the course portfolios. Examples from existing course portfolios will be incorporated into the workshop. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

The Polis Center at IUPUI is offering a series of free workshops to build data literacy skills and use the SAVI community information system as a resource. SAVI Training is a hands-on curriculum focused on data literacy from end to end. It features four groups of modules that teach one to ask the right questions, find the right data, find meaning in the data, and then use the data to make and communicate decisions. The 23nd Annual Facet Associate Faculty and Lecturer Conference (FALCON) will take place on November 9-10, 2018, at the Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre. The theme is Successful Strategies for Student Engagement: Sometimes it’s the little things . Gwynn Mettetal, IU South Bend, Chancellor’s Professor of Psychology and Education and founding Director of the University Center for Excellence in Teaching, will give the Robin Hass-Birky Keynote. Although office hours are a great resource for students, they are typically underutilized. Furthermore, students may e-mail their instructors with questions that can be more easily answered in an office hour setting, which increases faculty workload and frustration. This article provides several strategies to encourage students to use office hours and limit the use of e-mail for appropriate questions.
