The IUPUI Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invite interested IUPUI faculty to join the inaugural cohort of Forum Fellows. The purpose of the Forum Fellow position is to generate a greater sense of community among faculty on campus, to support professional development in areas that intersect with teaching (e.g., mentoring, multicultural competency) and to encourage innovation in teaching and SOTL scholarship. Supporting projects that involve interdisciplinary sharing and exchange among faculty from different schools is particularly valued. These positions have been created in direct response to recommendations articulated in the report submitted by the Faculty Development and Center for Teaching and Learning Task Force.

The Forum Fellow position is a part-time appointment for 1-2 years and should be ideal for an individual devoted to student learning and interested in gaining professional development experiences that could help provide a foundation for future leadership positions. The Office of Academic Affairs and Center for Teaching and Learning will compensate the Forum Fellow’s school to cover release time for the individual selected. Details of the appointment will be arranged with the individual’s school and may involve course buyouts during each academic year of the appointment.  For more information and application

Dr. Gopen's workshop is designed to teach participants a new, strategic approach to creating, analyzing, and editing scientific writing. Dr. Gopen is the Creator of "The Reader Expectation Approach." and his article, The Science of Scientific Writing, was selected by American Scientist as one of 36 "classic articles" in its 100 years of publications. An introductory workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. An advanced workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Click the event date and time for details.

Last winter, UITS announced the retirement of Adobe Connect. This will impact Adobe Presenter and Captivate recordings if you have them stored on the Adobe Connect server. All Adobe Presenter and Adobe Captivate content needs to be moved from the Connect server to a new location soon. This Faculty teaching showcase will feature a conversation between Paul Edwards, associate professor in the School of Dentistry, and Doug Jerolimov, CTL instructional consultant. Paul will share how he breaks down class-meeting learning objectives into a series of elemental worksheet-based cases that are rooted in real-world clinical scenarios, calling upon student to debate and negotiate analyses and solutions.

This workshop is one in a series of four that will address high-impact educational practices (HIPs) and is sponsored by the RISE Program and the Center for Teaching and Learning. This initial workshop will highlight the essential elements of HIPs, how they are being practiced on our campus and existing resources. One such resource includes the taxonomy guides, developed by units responsible for high-impact practices at IUPUI to support and enhance quality course design, enrich student experiences along with the research, scholarship, and assessment of HIPs. Electronic textbooks (etexts) have enormous potential to empower students and teachers. Every aspect of the IU eText initiative, as well as the eText reading tool itself, is designed to help students achieve their learning goals, and to enable faculty to improve their teaching. In this webinar, Tammy Fong Morgan will offer specific examples of how she has been using eTexts with Unizin Engage in her courses to improve student learning outcomes and engagement. Then she and co-presenter Mark Goodner will briefly discuss other eText successes, large and small, across the IU system. Finally, Mark will provide a guided tour of the eText reading platform, Unizin Engage, and some of its most important, empowering features.

Faculty expect their students to engage in study strategies that will lead to long-term retention of information. However, we rarely teach students which strategies are the most beneficial nor do we incorporate them into how we teach. In this webinar, participants will learn how memory works, how this information can be used to adapt the course structure, and how to incorporate activities into class sessions that will teach students to remember and apply what they are learning. Participants will walk away with specific strategies that they can incorporate in their classrooms immediately.

As IUPUI begins the process of reviewing general education courses, course coordinators or faculty responsible for preparing course portfolios for review may have questions about the information and materials that need to go into the portfolios. This workshop will provide an overview of the course review process, a review of course portfolio requirements, the process for assembling and submitting the portfolio, and the rubric that will be used to review the course portfolios. Examples from existing course portfolios will be incorporated into the workshop. Questions and discussion will be encouraged. 

The QM workshop introduces faculty and staff to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and to the QM Process. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized quality assurance organization for online course design, and the QM Process is a faculty-led peer review process that uses the research-based standards (criteria) of the QM Rubric to certify online courses.

How and when should you address disruptive student behaviors? Disruptive student behaviors are those behaviors which impede learning and teaching, and have the potential to escalate or spread if left unchecked. This webinar will present examples of disruptive student behaviors and participants will engage in discussions about how to prevent and manage such common disruptions in both the face-to-face and online teaching contexts.
