The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate Office invite applications from IUPUI graduate students to fill the position of CIRTL Graduate Teaching Assistant to assist in developing and implementing teaching-related professional development programming for graduate students and postdocs at CIRTL @ IUPUI. Metacognition refers to how learners think about and monitor their own knowledge, a process which has been shown to improve students’ learning. Metacognitive skills involve assessing the demands of a task, evaluating one’s own knowledge and skills, planning an approach, monitoring one’s progress, and adjusting strategies as needed to complete the task. Participants will learn how to blend metacognitive skill instruction with content instruction by using strategies such as instructor modeling of reflection, student self-reflection, visual organizers, formative assessments, and more.

This webinar is designed to help faculty consider best practices for evaluating course effectiveness. Evaluation refers to the process of determining whether student learning objectives or course outcomes are met. We will address the following questions:
• How do you develop an evaluation plan?
• What is formative versus summative evaluation?
• What are common data collection techniques?
• What are acceptable data analysis procedures?
• How can you ensure that your results are reliable?
• What should you do with your findings?

The presenters will include examples of STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute (SEIRI) evaluation projects that will enable attendees to apply these questions to their teaching contexts.

We have a new series of webinars to help you get up and running with Zoom, IU’s new video conferencing tool.  Beginners can start with Zoom: The Basics, and if you are ready, try a more advanced ZOOM workshop.

• An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching will be offered starting Monday, June 12. This is a CIRTL Massive Open Online course designed to provide future STEM faculty, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows with an introduction to effective teaching strategies and the research that supports them. The Call for Proposals for the 2nd IU Online Conference is now open. IU Online is seeking proposals from IU faculty and staff from across the state who
are innovators and collaborators in the online space. Proposals are due by 11:59 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2017.  Read more: https://teachingonline.iu.edu/events/conference2017

Participants will share best practices for teaching and learning with Canvas, discuss recent and upcoming enhancements, and network with other Canvas users.  The agenda is jam-packed with insights from educators, innovators, and thought leaders in both higher education and K-12.

CanvasCon is Monday, June 12, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the IUPUI Campus Center.  It is sponsored by Instructure, and co-hosted by UITS and the IU School of Education at IUPUI.  Registration is only $49 and includes breakfast, lunch, and the closing reception.  To register and more information, click here.

Nominations are due by Monday, October 16, 2017 for Distinguished Professorships; Distinguished Teaching Awards; Associate Instructor Awards; the Ehrlich, Pinnell, and Ryan Awards; and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology.
