Our students bring a rich array of knowledge, skills, experiences, and perspectives to our courses. We often recognize the value of leveraging diversity in solving research problems, in technological innovation, and in participatory democracy. |
However, leveraging student diversity in the classroom or online learning environments can be difficult, even when doing so is valued. How can instructors turn this challenge into an opportunity? And how can we create classroom environments in which every student is welcome to fully participate in learning?
In this presentation we’ll explore those questions and consider teaching practices that can involve more of our students actively in the construction of knowledge.
About the Speaker
Derek Bruff is director of the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching and a senior lectureer in the Vanderbilt Department of Mathematics. As director, he oversees the Center's programming and offerings for faculty and graduate students, helping them develop foundational teaching skills and explore new ideas in teaching and learning.
He also consults regularly with campus leaders about pedagogical issues, seeking to foster a university culture that supports effective teaching.

The STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute (SEIRI) will host a visit by NSF program officer, Ron Buckmire, who will present and lead an interactive discussion on ways to improve your proposal grant writing abilities and achieve the best possible results when applying to the NSF DUE/EHR programs. |
Ron Buckmire is the Lead Program Director of the Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM) program housed in the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Before coming to NSF in May 2016 as a permanent program director responsible for mathematics education, he had served as a rotator (temporary Program Director) in DUE from 2011-2013. He has been a faculty member at Occidental College in Los Angeles for 22 years, serving as chair of the Mathematics department (2005-2010, 2015-2016) and achieving the rank of Full Professor in 2014 after starting as a Minority Postdoctoral Scholar-in-Residence. Ron holds Mathematics degrees (Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc.) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has published peer-reviewed articles in an eclectic collection of journals such as Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations, IMA Journal of Management Mathematics, Works and Days and the Albany Law Review. His primary areas of research interest include mathematical modeling, applied mathematics, numerical analysis (specifically nonstandard finite-difference approximations of ordinary and partial differential equations), mathematical education and teaching with technology. He is an avid tennis fan, often active on social media (@madprofessah) and has regularly updated the blog The Mad Professah Lectures since 2005.
Lunch and light snacks will be provided at the event. NSF offers several grants and fellowships in disciplinary research and discipline-based educational research for faculty and graduate students.
