The Multicultural Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Graduate Office are launching a new learning community for graduate students and postdocs in teaching roles who are interested in engaging with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom. Topics of discussion will include teaching contentious curricula, cultivating inclusive language, and supporting underrepresented minorities in the classroom. This learning community is one of the first campus initiatives to offer graduate students and postdocs in teaching roles a safe space to engage with issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusive teaching. The first learning community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the Center for Teaching and Learning. The fall offering of this learning community will have space for a maximum of 10 members, so we encourage interested participants to apply as soon as possible. IUPUI and IU Bloomington have recently joined the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), a network of 46 universities dedicated to the advancement of undergraduate education in STEM and other disciplines through the professional development of future faculty. CIRTL at IUPUI is now open to all IUPUI graduate students and postdocs interested in engaging in the discussion and development of reflective and evidence-based teaching approaches that leverage student diversity and shared learning experiences. Starting in October 2016, participants can earn CIRTL Associate, CIRTL Practitioner, and CIRTL Scholar certifications through a free, self-paced badging program in Canvas. Students can use these badges on their CVs and in online career networking tools to showcase for prospective employers their CIRTL accomplishments. Jointly led by the IUPUI Graduate Office, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, CIRTL at IUPUI invites graduate students and postdocs to take advantage of a wide variety of local CIRTL programming and cross-network online programming. Sign-up for the CIRTL at IUPUI mailing list to receive updates about the local and cross-network CIRTL programming!

Mosaic is Indiana University's active learning initiative. Join other colleagues on September 9 to help launch Mosaic on the IUPUI campus.

IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor Kathy E. Johnson and Associate Vice President for Learning Technologies Anastasia (Stacy) Morrone will talk about the Mosaic Initiative and introduce the IUPUI Mosaic Faculty Fellows.

The luncheon will also feature J.D. Walker  and Christina Petersen from the University of Minnesota. They are leading researchers on active learning spaces and the pedagogical practices that support active learning. 

The Mosaic Initiative luncheon is sponsored by UITS, the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (FACET).

J.D. Walker and Christina Petersen are leading researchers on active learning spaces and the pedagogical practices that support active learning. Participants are invited to ask questions about Walker and Christina's extensive research on, faculty development efforts for, and experience teaching in active learning classrooms. This event will occur in Hine Hall 118, a Mosaic active learning classroom designed to support student collaboration in a large enrollment classroom.

Please note: This session follows the IUPUI Mosaic Luncheon, which ends at 1:00pm. 

Critical reflection on teaching and learning is a process that can lead to many positive outcomes for both novice and experienced educators. It is a way to improve our teaching practices by questioning assumptions, observing our practices, acting upon our observations, and evaluating the consequences of our actions. Engaging in critical reflection can also serve as a catalyst for the design of scholarly activities that contribute to the academic community and strengthen the dossiers of faculty seeking promotion and/or tenure.

Participants in this workshop will explore the process of critical reflection, including its essential elements and implications for teaching practice and student learning. To this end, participants will identify a teaching activity that they are currently engaged in that would be a suitable context in which to engage in critical reflection and the informed actions that follow.

Participants also will learn how they can apply to become a member of a Faculty Learning Community on the Role of Reflection in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), to begin in spring 2017.

This event is co-sponsored by the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Among the most basic forms of teaching practice, the effective lecture can still prove difficult to master. Composing and delivering lectures with student needs in mind, however, can help to increase student engagement and content retention. This online mini-workshop will offer ideas and considerations for creating lectures that help students achieve learning goals, with time for questions and discussion.

Using rubrics increases grading transparency, consistency, and efficiency while encouraging students to link assignments to learning objectives and become more critical assessors of their own work. However, many faculty feel that creating a rubric and using it effectively requires time and effort that they cannot spare. In this online mini-workshop, participants will learn some basic principles for quickly creating effective rubrics that will make assessing student work faster, more consistent, and more rewarding. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

Slide show presentations such as ones prepared in PowerPoint are ubiquitous but not always supportive of learning. In this session, participants will discover evidence-supported slide show presentation techniques that will encourage learning and promote engagement. To make the most of this session, participants should have proficiency with PowerPoint, Keynote or similar slide show authoring tools.

Learn how to use Canvas, IU's new Learning Management System, at your own pace or in a guided tutorial. The Center for Teaching and Learning, along with IT Training, offers a wide variety of workshops and webinars to help faculty set up Canvas sites for summer and fall semesters.

Gateway faculty will gather for a fall retreat on Friday, September 9th at 8:30 a.m. in Hine Hall, the Kelley Management Suite. They will celebrate "Gateway Works," in grand style. Gateway faculty will hear about the general education assessment program, as well as learn about "Backward Design." Each attendee will receive a copy of: Understanding by Design, by Grant J. Wiggins and Jay McTighe.

Additionally, everyone will hear from Gateway faculty doing great things in Technology, Intercultural Learning, and Academic Integrity.

Of course, there will be surprises!

The Office of Online Education, in collaboration with the Office of Collaborative Programs and eLearning Design and Services, is hosting an inaugural statewide IU Online Conference, November 11, 2016 on the IUPUI campus.  

In preparation for the conference, the Office of Online Education is seeking proposals from IU faculty and staff from across the state who are innovators and collaborators in the online space. These proposals will focus on supporting IU's mission of delivering high-quality, highly engaging, online courses and programs to IU students around the globe.

The Office of Online Education will consider proposals for 45-minute presentations that address empirical research, showcase best practices, and/or describe lessons learned related to online courses or programs. The Mack Fellows’ work is at the very core of the mission of Indiana University’s Mack Center for Inquiry on Teaching and Learning. Each year a group of fellows is selected from the full-time faculty (tenured, holding tenurable appointments, Lecturers, Librarians with Faculty rank) of IU campuses to advance the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL).  

Each applicant must propose an ambitious yet attainable SoTL research project that is innovative, well grounded in the emerging body of knowledge about SoTL, and has a projected important effect on the home campus, IU, SoTL and/or on scholarly teaching across the academy.  Applications are due by October 1, 2016.
