Canvas Information and Workshops
|
Learn how to use Canvas, IU's new Learning Management System, at your own pace or in a guided tutorial. The Center for Teaching and Learning, along with IT Training, offers a wide variety of workshops and webinars to help faculty set up Canvas sites for summer and fall semesters.
Upcoming workshops:
Oncourse to Canvas Migration Support
If you have been teaching in Oncourse and are ready to make the move to Canvas, here are some resources you may find helpful:
Changes to Turnitin Canvas Integration
Canvas courses for Summer 2016 were made available Thursday, 4/7. Along with the summer course availability comes a significant change with the Turnitin (IU’s originality checking and plagiarism prevention service) integration with Canvas. Turnitin and Canvas are discontinuing support for the existing Turnitin integration.
A new external tool integration with Turnitin became available on Thursday, 4/7. The new Turnitin tool is a substantial upgrade in security over the previous version. However, there are some significant changes in the way assignments are set up and connected to the service. In particular, any assignment you import from Spring 2016 and earlier will need to be reconnected with the Turnitin service.
View the Canvas instructions here and the updated IU Knowledge Base article with an included video tutorial. If you have any questions, please contact the CTL.

TurningPoint Cloud and New Options for Clickers at IU
|
In preparation for fall 2016, IU will be rolling out new student response systems (clickers). One option, TurningPoint Cloud, is the new version of the TurningPoint software that has been in use at Indiana University for several years. Support for TurningPoint 5 will be discontinued by the company on July 1, 2016. The other option for student response systems is Top Hat.
The new version of TurningPoint Cloud still supports both clicker devices and use of the students’ own devices, (Responseware). It is possible to mix device types in a single class. See About TurningPoint Cloud.
Top Hat is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) student response system with features that include new question types like rank answer and click-on-target, an attendance tool, live student comments that can be upvoted during class, and tournament mode. Responses can be graded based on participation, performance, or both. See About Top Hat. Requests are in the system to install TurningPoint Cloud on classroom computers, and the TurningPoint Cloud software can be run from a USB flash drive. Top Hat is completely in the cloud, so there is no software to install.
For both products, students will need to purchase accounts, even TurningPoint users who already have clicker devices. For students who already have TurningPoint devices, a rebate will be available to offset the cost of the new TurningPoint Cloud account.
For summer courses, TurningPoint 5 users can continue to use TurningPoint 5. Anyone who wishes to move to Top Hat can do so at any time. We will continue to update you with information about this transition. The Center for Teaching and Learning has dedicated TurningPoint support available every week if you would like to schedule individual consultations or run into any issues with the software.

Mosaic Faculty Fellows
|
The Mosaic Active Learning Initiative is Indiana University’s comprehensive set of services and strategies to support faculty and students using active learning spaces.
The Mosaic Faculty Fellows program gives instructors the support they need to transform their teaching and promote engaged student learning. The program has four goals: • Preparing faculty members to teach in active learning classrooms by introducing them to new instructional strategies and technologies • Building a community of faculty members who collaborate to advance their own teaching and to mentor colleagues exploring new pedagogies • Promoting evidence-based teaching by encouraging instructors to study the impacts of new spaces and instructional approaches on student learning • Creating faculty leaders who work together to guide the development of new learning spaces across the university
The program is a one-year commitment to transforming teaching and contributing to the development of learning spaces and related teaching practices at IUPUI. To learn more about the Mosaic Faculty Fellows program and its benefits, please visit: https://uits.iu.edu/mosaic/fellows.

Teaching is crucial to the mission of every college and university – even if the degree programs, students, faculty members and institutional missions vary widely. Whether trying to teach first-year composition or advanced science, faculty members are pushing themselves and their students.
Join Inside Higher Ed editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman for a free webinar on innovation in teaching Tuesday, May 24 at 2:00 PM ET. In this webinar, Scott and Doug will discuss:
- Why some universities are giving STEM education more attention.
- How certain traits of undergraduate education are linked to success in life.
- Why some universities are getting rid of 8 a.m. classes.
- The debate between quality vs. quantity of writing assignments.
Can't attend the webinar? You should still register. All registrants will receive a recording of the webinar and a copy of the presentation.
