Canvas offers instructors many ways to communicate with their students. In this webinar, Madeleine Gonin from the CITL and Kim Murday of IT Training will discuss best practices for using the following tools: the inbox, announcements, chat, discussions, and notifications. Participants will then be able to determine which communication options best meet their needs.
Prerequisites: A basic understanding of Canvas is required. Participants should have attended a First Look workshop, read the Instructor Quickstart guide, and/or watched the instructor videos available at http://guides.instructure.com.

Quality Matters - Applying the QM Rubric

Indiana University has subscribed to Quality Matters (QM) as a tool and process for the design, development, and ongoing review of online courses, especially those that are part of the IU Online initiative. The Applying the QM Workshop is QM's official workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online courses. It is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM Rubric and process of course review.
This workshop will introduce faculty and staff to the QM Rubric and Process, sharing best practices for online course design. The QM Rubric is a research-based set of standards that can be used during the course design process. The QM Process is a peer review process that eventually will review many IU Online courses, with the goal of achieving QM Recognition for mature online courses in the near future. Also, the APPQMR is the pre-requisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is the required course to become a QM Peer Reviewer.
This workshop will be offered at IUPUI face-to-face from 9am until 4:30pm, with occasional breaks. Participants will have one hour for lunch, and are free to bring their own lunch or take advantage of the many options available on campus. To receive the QM certificate of completion for this workshop, participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop.

Peer Assessment in Canvas

This session will allow participants to experience the peer assessment (peer review) features built into Canvas Assignments. Following an overview of what peer assessment, participants will have the opportunity to complete, then build, a peer assessment activity based upon the principles discussed earlier in this session.

Using Groups in Canvas

In Canvas, Groups are a way instructors can create spaces for groups of students to submit group assignments and collaborate as part of a course. Canvas Sections allow faculty to organize students in a course and manage access to some course features. This workshop will present an overview of Canvas Groups and Sections, demonstrate uses of both in courses, and allow participants to have a group and section experience.

Research: Scientific Writing from the Reader's Perspective with Dr. George Gopen

As competition for external funding becomes more challenging, getting one’s scholarly work successfully published is more important than ever. Dr. Gopen’s approach is based on a single idea: learning to write for the reader allows the writer to control what readers learn.
This year, Dr. George Gopen will present this workshop on Tuesday, July 28. If you are planning to attend the advanced workshop on Wednesday, July 29 you MUST attend this workshop or have attended one in the years prior.

About the Presenter
George D. Gopen is a Duke University Professor of the Practice of Rhetoric. He is also Senior Lecturing Fellow, Department of English and Senior Lecturing Fellow, School of Law. Professor Gopen received both his J.D. and his Ph.D. in English from Harvard University. Dr. Gopen is a pioneer in the mastery of scientific writing. His scientific clients have included the NIH, the FDA, Bristol-Myers Squib, Bayer, and Duke University School of Medicine.

To promote the professional development of associate faculty (part-time/adjunct), the Center for Teaching and Learning holds an annual Associate Faculty Teaching Forum the beginning of fall semester. If you are a part-time faculty member, whether new or returning, you are invited to attend the Associate Faculty Teaching Forum, designed to support your teaching role at IUPUI. At this event, discuss with your peers teaching methodologies and classroom techniques, and new ways of using technology in the classroom and online. Forum tracks are designed to encourage discussion and the sharing of ideas between new and experienced instructors about teaching techniques and approaches.

It’s no secret that our digital natives are transforming academic culture via their relationship with technology. Instructors have a wide variety of options to use this trend to benefit their teaching. Transformation can come in small increments, but requires rethinking how we teach and how we meet our students where they are: online. This workshop will investigate student opinions and experiences with technology and will provide instructors a bounty of ideas to utilize in their next class. Discover how to build learning opportunities and improve learning outcomes by understanding how students use technology to learn and engage with their faculty. This workshop is eligible for Gateway Teaching Academy credit.

Hear how your colleagues are increasing engagement and social presence, and get some hands-on experience with this Canvas- and Oncourse- integrated tool.Please bring your laptop or tablet if you can but there will be a few extra laptops available for those who need one.

This year the IU Northwest New Teaching Institute is open to all IU campuses and is calling for proposals for the 3rd annual conference. The New Teaching Institute is focused on transforming teaching, one new method, tool, or technology at a time. Sessions will vary and are appropriate for traditional, blended, and online teaching. Teach others how to do something, show off what you've done, or demonstrate a technique that's worked for you. If you're using Canvas, you can even propose a session about a specific tool or course design method in Canvas.
