ETTA Fall Conference

Educational Training for Teaching Assistants (ETTA) is a program centered on the training and development of graduate students in the area of teaching. Teaching assistants with training exhibit a significantly higher level of self-efficacy than those with no training (Prieto and Altmaier, 1994), as well as being more confident, comfortable in front of students and overall more effective in the classroom. ETTA is designed to meet the needs of teaching assistants (TAs) by providing basic and advanced learning opportunities on topics relevant to their role in the classroom.
The ETTA Fall Conference is the keystone event for the ETTA Program and will set the stage for attendees to improve their effectiveness in the classroom and place them on a path to becoming exceptional instructors. The Conference will be an all-day event with a combination of session formats including interactive workshops, group work, experiential learning and even games. Lunch and snacks will be provided. After attending the conference, attendees will be equipped with tools, tips and techniques to be more effective teachers in the classroom as well as know how to find recourses on campus and how to utilize the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Graduate Office to enhance their teaching throughout the semester.

Scientific Writing from the Reader's Perspective

As competition for external funding becomes more challenging, getting one's scholarly work successfully published is more important than ever. Dr. Gopen's approach is based on a single idea: learning to write for the reader allows the writer to control what readers learn.
This year, Dr. George Gopen will present this workshop in a SINGLE DAY format. Participants will register for EITHER Tuesday, July 9 OR Wednesday, July 10. As in past years, Dr. Gopen will also conduct hour-long, individualized consultations. ONLY faculty members who participate in the day-long event will have access to the individual consultation registration. Instructions will be sent to participants after their registration for the workshop is complete.
More about Dr. Gopen's original approach to scientific writing can be found in his article, The Science of Scientific Writing. Sponsored by the IU School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, the IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, and the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning.
Gopen is a Duke University Professor of the Practice of Rhetoric. He is also Senior Lecturing Fellow, Department of English and Senior Lecturing Fellow, School of Law. Dr. Gopen received both his J.D. and his Ph.D. in English from Harvard University. He is a pioneer in the mastery of scientific writing, with clients such as the NIH, FDA, Bristol-Myers Squib, Bayer, and Duke University School of Medicine.

Implementing Cyber Peer-Led Team Learning (cPLTL) - Date Change

This half day workshop will have participants exploring ways to implement cyber peer-led learning (cPLTL). Attendees will learn about the essential components of Peer-Led Team Learning and how the approach was "retooled" by a team led by Pratibha Varma-Nelson at IUPUI for the online environment. Furthermore, attendees will experience a mock cPLTL workshop in which they will gain technical skill using Adobe Connect, multiple web cams and microphones. cPLTL is the “cyber” evolution of Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) to an online format. PLTL is a model of teaching that preserves the lecture and replaces recitation in science courses with a weekly two-hour session. During these interactive sessions (workshops), six to eight students work as a team to solve carefully constructed problems under the guidance of a peer leader. A light lunch will be provided.
