IUPUI ePortfolio Spring Symposium

The IUPUI ePortfolio Spring Symposium features a mixture of presentations by colleagues currently using ePortfolios and updates from members of the ePortfolio team. This year’s theme is ePortfolio Teaching and Learning.
- Susan Kahn, Director of the ePortfolio Initiative, will provide an overview of teaching and learning with ePortfolios.
- Cathy Buyarski of University College will describe the developing conceptual model for the Electronic Personal Development Plan (ePDP).
- A panel of faculty who use ePortfolio in senior capstone courses will discuss how the ePortfolio contributes to integrative learning and to documenting student learning throughout the major and/or the undergraduate experience. Panelists will include:

- Tyrone Freeman, Philanthropic Studies
- Karen Johnson, English
- Patrick Kinsman, Art History
- Lynn Ward of UITS and Susan Kahn will provide a status report on ePortfolios and the Next. IU initiative to explore new learning platforms.

Preparing Your Course Site in Oncourse

In this online workshop, you will be guided through the steps necessary to set up your course site in Oncourse. You will learn how to import course material from another course site, load your syllabus, add items to Resources, and set up your Gradebook. During the workshop you will have opportunities to set up your course site. Be sure to have your syllabus and any other course material on-hand.

Submitting Final Grades in Oncourse

This workshop is designed for all levels of Oncourse users. This fast-paced workshop will guide you through the process of using Oncourse to submit your final grades with the SIS Grade Roster tool. For the greatest benefit, participants should have course grades calculated and displaying accurately in the Oncourse Gradebook's Course Grades page prior to the workshop.

Creating an Honors Contract with Your Student

Many IUPUI faculty members work with Honors College students to make it possible to earn honors credit for courses. In this interactive workshop, participants will discuss and reflect on how to assist students in creating effective projects through identifying specific goals and outcomes for honors contracts. A faculty panel will discuss their experiences with honors contracts and share their advice for creating a successful faculty and student experience.
Honors College students will also talk about their needs and concerns when working through the process and completing contracts. Finally Honors College staff will provide resources such as examples of completed honors contracts which meet the goals we want our students to achieve by engaging in the honors contract experience. Assessment of students' work will also be discussed.

The Office of Academic Affairs invites you to attend the 2013 Plater Institute Monday, April 22.
This year’s event is entitled “Integrative Learning: Translating Theory into Practice” and features keynote speaker Dr. Mary Taylor Huber, director of the Carnegie Foundation’s role in the U.S. Professors of the Year program and advisor to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Dr. Huber has written extensively on cultures of teaching in higher education, integrative learning, and faculty roles and rewards.
Recent books which Dr. Huber has authored include: Balancing Acts: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Academic Careers (2004); The Advancement of Learning: Building the Teaching Commons (2005); and The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Reconsidered: Institutional Integration and Impact (2011).

Third Annual Critical Thinking Symposium with speaker Stephen Brookfield
