In partnership with the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law and the IUPUI Office for Women, this year's CTL Lecture Series speaker is Professor, Provost and Executive Vice President of Indiana University, Bloomington, Lauren K. Robel. As a past president of the Association of American Law Schools, Provost Robel will speak in part about the pedagogical challenges and teaching practices law schools face. A reception will precede the lecture from 5:30 - 6 p.m., the lecture is 6 - 7:30 p.m. There will be time for a question and answer session.

The Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence is one of IUPUI's oldest public events, dating from the years of IUPUI's inception. Named in honor of Edward C. Moore, former dean of the faculties, the symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine the various instructional strategies that encourage student learning. This year's keynote speaker is Jose Antonio Bowen, Algur H Meadows Chair and Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University and author of the book Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning.

Request for Proposals
The IU Office of Online Education will fund Special Focus Curriculum Enhancement Grants (SF-CEG) in Support of IU Online. The purpose of the grant initiative is to provide faculty with support, time, and resources to develop online courses or programs designed to improve student learning and success at IUPUI and IUPU Columbus. A particular priority is for proposals emphasizing graduate and professional level offerings. Proposal submission deadline is April 12, 2013. Click here for the guidelines and application.

We are familiar with the basics needed in a classroom: a syllabus, a schedule, ice-breakers, etc. But how do faculty actually create syllabi that are effective and successful in enhancing learning? What are the items that faculty need to include in a syllabus to help prevent problems later in the semester? This session will answer those questions and provide resources and language to include in your syllabus.

Evidence-based Teaching: Principles and Practices

In this half-day workshop, participants will learn how to apply research on learning to their practice of teaching. Principles include how students' learning is affected by their prior knowledge, how they organize information, their motivation, how they develop mastery, and how they monitor their learning. Through presentation, examples, discussion, and application, participants will incorporate each principle into their courses. Please bring course materials (e.g., syllabus, assignments, assessments). You will leave this workshop a more informed, purposeful, and effective teacher.

CourseNetworking CN (Beta): Academic Social Networking in Oncourse

Faculty at Indiana University are incorporating social pedagogies into their teaching practices through the use of CourseNetworking (CN [Beta]). Attendees will learn how to use CN tools as a complement to Oncourse and how to expand the learning environment beyond the traditional boundaries. Presenters from the IUPUI CyberLab will discuss the functionality of CN and faculty support structures in place, take questions, and show examples of how faculty are using CN for academic networking and MOOCs. Nanotechnology Discovery Summer Camp for High School Students

The IUPUI Nanotechnology Discovery Academy (INDA) Summer Camp is a week-long day camp (June 10-14, 2013, or June 24-28, 2013) that provides a unique opportunity for high-school students entering their sophomore, junior, and senior years to explore the interdisciplinary field of nanotechnology on the IUPUI campus. Nanotechnology concerns the control of matter in the nanometer scale: one nanometer is one billionth of a meter, or 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. This cutting-edge field is becoming an essential part of science, engineering, medicine, and many other disciplines. The camp fee ($295) covers all camp materials and supplies, and includes daily lunch and the cost of one IUPUI course credit. Need-based scholarships may be available; housing and transportation not available. APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 8, 2013.
Participating high-school students will work with world-renowned faculty mentors to: Discover innovative technologies, gain hands-on laboratory experience, engage in research and learning activities and earn one college-credit hour.
