Project Title:
Improving Language Instruction and Learning in First-Year Spanish
Funding Level:
$27,882
Abstract:
The proposed course enhancement for the First-Year Spanish program aims to establish a robust administrative support system for instruction, prioritize the cultural aspects of language learning, and emphasize real-life language application. By incorporating a content-based, communicative-focused, and learner-centered methodology, the course will align with ACTFL performance standards to ensure high-quality language education. Intended learner outcomes include increased awareness of effective language retention and growth methods, understanding the benefits of acquiring a second language, and developing intercultural competence. The program aims to produce learners with the language skills necessary for further study and real-world application, achieving target proficiency levels and intercultural awareness that extend beyond the classroom. Teaching practice outcomes will feature a consistent curriculum across all instructors, research-based language instruction practices centered on cultural context, and a focus on real-life language use within a framework of high-leverage teaching practices. The curriculum will be fully articulated and developed through backward design, ensuring alignment with desired outcomes and standards. This comprehensive approach will enhance the overall effectiveness of the First-Year Spanish program, fostering a supportive and culturally rich learning environment.
