A teaching philosophy presents a faculty member’s reflection on the experiences and beliefs that shape his or her teaching and learning strategies. Often used as part of a job application, a promotion and tenure dossier, a teaching award nomination, or course syllabi, a teaching philosophy captures and documents a teacher’s values and aspirations in teaching. This webinar will review one model for structuring a teaching philosophy and will also examine some example philosophies. Webinar participants will take the first steps in articulating their teaching philosophy; those who have already begun to craft a philosophy will have an opportunity to continue that work.

This session introduces faculty and graduate students to best practices of documenting one’s teaching. Participants will examine different approaches to capture evidence of teaching and learning, and to make the case for teaching achievements. Participants will consider how to shape their evolution as teachers through the use of student course evaluations, peer reviews of teaching, and other means of measuring student learning.

Creating assignments that align with and allow for the accurate assessment of learning objectives requires careful planning. Such planning can help improve student understanding of your expectations, student achievement of your learning objectives, and can also set the stage for a smoother assessment process. This webinar will review methods for designing or refining assignments to target specific objectives, for communicating critical assignment components to students, and for scaffolding assignments to help students achieve intended learning outcomes.

Learn how to use Canvas, IU's new Learning Management System, at your own pace or in a guided tutorial. The Center for Teaching and Learning, along with IT Training, offers a wide variety of workshops and webinars to help faculty set up Canvas sites for summer and fall semesters.

Changes to Turnitin Canvas Integration

Canvas courses for Summer 2016 were made available Thursday, 4/7.  Along with the summer course availability comes a significant change with the Turnitin (IU’s originality checking and plagiarism prevention service) integration with Canvas. Turnitin and Canvas are discontinuing support for the existing Turnitin integration. 

A new external tool integration with Turnitin became available on Thursday, 4/7. The new Turnitin tool is a substantial upgrade in security over the previous version. However, there are some significant changes in the way assignments are set up and connected to the service. In particular, any assignment you import from Spring 2016 and earlier will need to be reconnected with the Turnitin service.

FACET, an Indiana University Presidential initiative, is designed both to recognize and enhance outstanding teaching throughout IU, and to promote continued development of teaching excellence among colleagues at IU and beyond.  Eleven faculty members, from IU campuses across the state, were selected to the FACET Class of 2016. Back by popular demand! This three-session series is designed to train participants to communicate complex scientific topics more effectively to non-experts like patients, learners, lawmakers, and funders. This program is free and open to all IUSM and IUPUI faculty and graduate students.

All participants are asked to commit to the entire three workshop series, as each session builds upon the previous. Please note, if you register for this event, you will be registered for all three sessions.  The workshop series includes: Connecting with your Audience, Distilling your Message, Media Training for Scientists and Physicians.
