This introductory Canvas session is specifically designed to meet the different roles and needs of graduate students in teaching roles – teaching assistants, associate instructors, graders, and others. It is also part of our Educational Training for Teaching Associates (ETTA) program for graduate students in instructional roles.
In this introductory session participants will have the opportunity to take a first-hand look at the Canvas learning management system through the lens of a graduate student in an instructional role. During this hands-on workshop participants will explore and work with the following:
- Canvas navigation
- Messaging and Notifications in Canvas
- Maintaining course assignments, quizzes, and discussions
- Grading and gradebooks in Canvas
- Canvas troubleshooting and help resources

Associate Faculty Orientation and Teaching Forum

To promote the professional development of associate faculty (part-time/adjunct), the Center for Teaching and Learning holds an annual Associate Faculty Teaching Forum at the beginning of fall semester. If you are a part-time faculty member, whether new or returning, you are invited to attend the Associate Faculty Teaching Forum, an event designed to support your teaching role at IUPUI. At this event, discuss with your peers teaching methodologies and classroom techniques, and new ways of using technology in the classroom and online. Forum tracks are designed to encourage discussion and the sharing of ideas between new and experienced instructors about teaching techniques and approaches.
The CTL is happy to announce we are expanding the Associate Faculty Teaching Forum to include a one-hour orientation for associate faculty. This orientation is intended to help new or fairly new associate faculty know where to go for information about teaching, students, and their role as an employee and faculty member of IUPUI. Included in presentations and handouts will be information on working with the registrar's office, Adaptive Educational Services, UITS, Faculty Affairs, and more. General information about parking, using your JagTag, reserving conference rooms on campus, plus much more, will also be provided. The orientation will begin at 1 p.m. in University Library.
An extended version of the orientation portion of this event will be offered again on Saturday, August 22 from 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. in Taylor Hall 2110. Registration and details for that event may be found here.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced University Hall’s Active Learning spaces and the potential of these spaces to support engaged learning. This session will also explore current active learning classroom practices as referenced in literature. Further, participants will experience learning activities within these spaces and use these experiences to shape their own strategies for teaching.

The ETTA Fall Conference is designed for all IUPUI graduate students who serve—or who will serve—in any type of teaching-related role. Sessions will cover topics ranging from managing time and grading to using technology in the classroom and teaching online. The keystone of the ETTA program, the fall conference is an all-day event combining interactive workshops, group work, and experiential learning. It will set the stage for attendees to improve their effectiveness in the classroom and will place them on a path to becoming exceptional instructors. The conference is free and lunch will be provided.

Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement

A teaching philosophy statement articulates the assumptions and expectations that shape a faculty member's teaching strategies. Often used as part of a job application, a promotion and tenure dossier, a teaching award nomination, and course syllabi, a teaching philosophy captures and documents a teacher’s values and successes in teaching. This workshop will involve active writing and revising to engage participants in conceptualizing, drafting, and revising a statement of teaching philosophy. Each participant should bring a laptop, pen and paper, or some other device with which to work. Participants with existing statements of teaching philosophy can develop them further during this session. The workshop will last two and a half hours.

Teaching@IUPUI Online Mini Workshops
Teaching@IUPUI is an ongoing series of online mini-workshops focused on foundational teaching skills. Designed for new faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate students, and those looking for a refresher on good teaching practices, the workshops are short, with a brief presentation interspersed with opportunities for interaction and questions. Grounded in current research, the workshops address various teaching topics and provide participants with strategies and resources to make instruction more effective, efficient, and enjoyable. Sessions are scheduled with the time of semester in mind, to keep topics relevant for faculty needs at that time. Recordings of past Teaching@IUPUI webinars are available on the Center for Teaching and Learning website for you to access anytime.

2016 E.C. Moore Symposium Call for Proposals
The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning seeks proposals from faculty teaching at universities across Indiana for the 2016 E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching. The symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine teaching excellence and the instructional strategies employed in various disciplines to encourage student learning. Proposals should address one of the following: efforts to improve student learning and engagement, evidence-based practices in teaching, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the innovative use of instructional technology, and initiatives that promote excellence in teaching. Proposals that have application to other disciplines are strongly encouraged. The 2016 E.C. Moore Symposium will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center on Friday, March 25, 2016.
Proposals will be accepted through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2015.
