Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Pathway to Supporting Student and Faculty Success

In this three-part webinar series led by Dr. Carol Hostetter, you will explore foundational principles of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and how it can serve as a pathway to support student success while strengthening your position as a scholarly educator for career advancement and awards. While the webinars will focus on SoTL, the research methods and principles can be extended into one’s disciplinary research.

Part 1: Introduction to SoTL

September 24, 12 – 1:00 p.m. on Zoom

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is an exciting avenue for faculty to pose questions that can direct their search for evidence on how to support student success. Through systematic inquiry, faculty can understand differences in student learning in meaningful ways. The interactive workshop will focus on finding a researchable problem, engaging with the literature, matching questions to methods, understanding ethical considerations, and publication opportunities.

Part 2: Finding and Using SoTL Literature

October 29, 12 – 1:00 p.m.

This interactive webinar introduces key strategies for finding and using literature in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Participants will learn how to locate relevant databases, identify discipline-specific as well as general SoTL journals, and critically evaluate articles focused on student success. We will explore how to apply research findings to our own classrooms and begin framing research questions grounded in current literature.

Part 3: Introduction to SoTL Methods

December 3, 12 – 1:00 p.m.

Research in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning uses qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method approaches. In this webinar, participants will review examples of SoTL studies focused on student success. We will explore how to align research questions with appropriate methodologies, especially those participants have honed through their own disciplinary research. Both ethical and practical concerns will be discussed. Participants will be given a resource directing their next steps in designing their own SoTL study.

About the Facilitator

Carol Hostetter is Professor Emerita from the School of Social Work at Indiana University, having joined the faculty in 2001. She has won many teaching awards, including the top teaching award for all eight campuses of Indiana University. Dr. Hostetter has been a leader in Indiana University’s teaching academy, FACET (Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching) as well as in Indiana University’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) program. Her SoTL grants, presentations and publications focus on social presence in online courses, high-impact practices and learning analytics. Carol is CTL’s SoTL Faculty Fellow and leads the center’s SoTL programming planning and delivery.
