Emerging Scholars of College Instruction Program (ESCIP) provides IU Indianapolis graduate students an opportunity to develop and document their teaching skills through a three semester program.
Upon program completion, participants will have constructed the foundational components of their teaching portfolio, including:
- sample course materials,
- teaching observation reports, and
- a preliminary teaching philosophy statement.
ESCIP Timeline Overview
Semester One
Participants will explore the basic foundational teaching principles and the effective use of instructional technology in their various teaching contexts.
Semester Two
Participants are introduced to literature on discipline-based education research to develop various evidence-based disciplinary approaches to their teaching.
Semester Three
Participants engage in scholarly teaching through a focused literature review, lesson planning and assessment design, and self-reflection and formal teaching evaluations by the CTL and other faculty.

The ESCIP is not a K-12 teacher licensing program and is non-credit bearing. As a result, it will not appear on participants’ transcripts. It can and should be listed on participants’ C.V.s.
ESCIP Application Process
Any graduate student who will graduate after May 2019, and who is currently in a teaching role or will have future teaching opportunities (as primary instructor, lab instructor, grader, classroom assistant, managing office hours and recitations, or giving guest lectures) can apply for the ESCIP. The online application system will open in early October, and applications for the 2018 Cohort will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2017.
Submissions for the 2018 ESCIP Cohort is now closed.
CTL consultants will review the applications and admit a maximum of only ten new cohort members based on their likelihood to complete the program within the specified time frame (3 semesters) and their interest in a career in university teaching. Successful applicants will be notified no later than early December.

Faculty Advisors:
The Emerging Scholars of College Instruction program is not remedial; it is intended to provide IU Indianapolis graduate teaching assistants with a solid foundation for a successful teaching career after graduation. The program is also intended primarily for doctoral students, but master’s students may apply if they can fit program requirements into their degree timeline. New program cohorts begin each spring semester with a welcome meeting in early January.
