Math Is Out, Cake Is In: Introducing Students to Rubrics
|
|
Forbes, S.A. (2025, August 27). Math is out, cake is in: Introducing students to rubrics. Faculty Focus.
Rubrics are valuable tools to help students learn. Often, however, students neither recognize the value of rubrics nor understand how to use them. This article shows us one way to introduce the rubric, helping students to see its value and to practice using rubrics in different ways to improve learning. Instructors already see the value of rubrics to guide and streamline grading and feedback; this article offers an example of how students might also use the rubric to guide and self-assess their learning.

Do you wonder what all the fuss is about? NotebookLM is a powerful AI-powered research tool that lets you upload your own sources instead of the AI citing quasi-random websites. In this online workshop we'll explore the teaching potential of NotebookLM, a generative AI tool that all IU instructors have access to that offers some active ways to engage students (it will create a podcast) and curbs some of the errors that other generative AI are prone to make. In this research-based workshop we will explore some of the functions of NotebookLM and discuss assignments that encourage student critical thinking. Workshop participants will be able to:
- Explore the basic functions of NotebookLM.
- Design assignments that improve student critical thinking and metacognition.
- Add transparency to improve learning outcomes and avoid academic misconduct issues.
No prior knowledge of generative AI will be required, but login with your device and an open mind and there will be opportunities to participate and ask questions. We look forward to your participation and hearing your questions!

This is the first webinar in a three-part series “Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: A Pathway to Supporting Student and Faculty Success”. In this three-part webinar series, participants will explore foundational principles of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and how it can serve as a pathway to support student success while strengthening your position as a scholarly educator for career advancement and awards. While the webinars will focus on SoTL, the research methods and principles can be extended into one’s disciplinary research.
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is an exciting avenue for faculty to pose questions that can direct their search for evidence on how to support student success. Through systematic inquiry, faculty can understand differences in student learning in meaningful ways. This interactive webinar will focus on finding a researchable problem, engaging with the literature, matching questions to methods, understanding ethical considerations, and publication opportunities.

When you use Canvas to provide instructional materials, engage students in activities, or assess student understanding, Canvas gathers data about it. Using built-in dashboards, you can easily access a variety of data and see how students are engaging with your Canvas course site. This kind of data is a good starting place to identify indicators of success or challenges in your courses. Combined with other sources of student feedback, data can become information you can actively use to support student success.
In this webinar you will learn how to access various types of Canvas data, what they do and don’t mean, and how to supplement that data to paint a fuller picture of your course.
