The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Graduate Office will conduct the 2017 IUPUI TA Orientation on Thursday, August 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the IT Building. Graduate students anticipating to be first-time teaching assistants in Fall 2017 or Spring 2018 are encouraged to register for and attend the TA Orientation. Attendees will learn more about IUPUI policies and procedures and be equipped with basic tools and strategies to successfully start their teaching responsibilities at IUPUI. The QM workshop introduces faculty and staff to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and to the QM Process. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized quality assurance organization for online course design, and the QM Process is a faculty-led peer review process that uses the research-based standards (criteria) of the QM Rubric to certify online courses.

In-person QM workshops will be offered on the following dates.  Each workshop will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  To register for an event or for more information, click on the dates listed below.

Note:  Participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop to receive QM certificate.

This webinar is provided by IU Top Hat representative, Sarah Hammond, in partnership with IT Training.

After a university-wide pilot, Top Hat has been selected as Indiana University’s new student response system. TurningPoint Cloud will continue to be available for Spring and Summer 2017 terms, but will no longer be supported in Fall 2017.

Top Hat is an interactive, cloud-based teaching platform that enables instructors to engage students both inside and outside the classroom with compelling content and activities.

• Use Top Hat to take attendance
• Use Top Hat to ask interactive questions with automated grading
• Use Top Hat to facilitate open-ended discussions and activities
• Use Top Hat's seamless integration with Canvas to update Top Hat rosters and send Top Hat grades to the Canvas gradebook

Metacognition refers to how learners think about and monitor their own knowledge, a process which has been shown to improve students’ learning. Metacognitive skills involve assessing the demands of a task, evaluating one’s own knowledge and skills, planning an approach, monitoring one’s progress, and adjusting strategies as needed to complete the task. Participants will learn how to blend metacognitive skill instruction with content instruction by using strategies such as instructor modeling of reflection, student self-reflection, visual organizers, formative assessments, and more.

This webinar is designed to help faculty consider best practices for evaluating course effectiveness. Evaluation refers to the process of determining whether student learning objectives or course outcomes are met. We will address the following questions:
• How do you develop an evaluation plan?
• What is formative versus summative evaluation?
• What are common data collection techniques?
• What are acceptable data analysis procedures?
• How can you ensure that your results are reliable?
• What should you do with your findings?

The presenters will include examples of STEM Education Innovation and Research Institute (SEIRI) evaluation projects that will enable attendees to apply these questions to their teaching contexts.

Learn how to use Canvas, IU's new Learning Management System, at your own pace or in a guided tutorial. The Center for Teaching and Learning, along with IT Training, offers a wide variety of workshops and webinars to help faculty set up Canvas sites for summer and fall semesters.

• Developing a CV or Resume will be offered on Thursday, June 22 and Thursday, June 29, 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In this two-part online workshop, participants will learn how CVs and resumes vary for academic positions, non-academic positions, and grant applications. • Level Up: Designing a Game-Based Learning Environment will be offered on Tuesday, June 27, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. In this online workshop, attendees will learn about various elements of game design that can help engage and motivate students such as collaboration, autonomy, purpose, competition, feedback, and scaffolding. Click here to register for this workshop.

Nominations are due by Monday, October 16, 2017 for Distinguished Professorships; Distinguished Teaching Awards; Associate Instructor Awards; the Ehrlich, Pinnell, and Ryan Awards; and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology.
