E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching

Join faculty from across the state of Indiana in a discussion of teaching and learning at the 2015 E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching in the IUPUI Campus Center. This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Dan Bernstein, Professor of Cognitive Psychology and former Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Kansas. His talk is entitled "Building on What They Know: Preparing a Path to Engaged Learning." This year's plenary speaker is Dr. Debora Herold, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at IUPUI. Her talk is entitled "Teaching Them How to Learn." When registering for the symposium, participants can opt to attend one of the faculty-led workshops listed below. The workshops will run from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. (You can change your workshop selection at a later date by cancelling your original event registration, re-registering, and selecting another workshop to attend.)

Using Groups in Canvas - Webinar

In Canvas, Groups are a way instructors can create spaces for groups of students to submit group assignments and collaborate as part of a course. Canvas Sections allow faculty to organize students in a course and manage access to some course features. This workshop will present an overview of Canvas Groups and Sections, demonstrate uses of both in courses, and allow participants to have a group and section experience.

Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement

A teaching philosophy statement is a self-reflective expression of a faculty member’s beliefs that shape his or her teaching and learning strategies. It is often used as part of a job application, a promotion and tenure dossier, a teaching award nomination, and course syllabi. This workshop will engage participants in conceptualizing, drafting, and revising a statement of teaching philosophy. This workshop will involve active participation; each participant should bring a copy of his or her current statement of teaching philosophy. The presenters will help participants who don’t have a statement get started on one. The workshop will last two and a half hours.

Building and Organizing Content in Canvas with Modules

Canvas offers new ways of organizing and presenting content to students through the Modules tool. Organize files, assignments, quizzes, web links, and custom web pages in a format that guides the learner experience through your course content. This is a hands-on workshop where you will have the opportunity to build a module that using the tools mentioned above.

Interacting with International Students in Class and Office Hours

Do you have international students in your class? Do you sometimes feel you could communicate better, or that their interaction with their American peers could be improved? In a university in which the international population is growing by leaps and bounds, effective communication with our international students is important. This workshop will define the difficulties non-native speakers of English may have in classroom interaction and during office hours. It will illustrate tips for effective interaction using student testimonies and the presenters’ knowledge and experience. Questions addressed in this workshop include:
• What are the struggles international students experience in the classroom or office hours? • What strategies can faculty employ to stimulate international student participation in class? • How can faculty facilitate more dialog between international and domestic students in the classroom?
The workshop will engage the audience in a reflection and discussion of what constitutes effective classroom dynamics; analyses of student testimonies; reflection on personal instructional goals regarding classroom interaction with international students; small- and large-group discussions; and presentation of research- and experience-based content by the workshop leaders.

Center for Service and Learning Grants and Scholarships
CSL Dissemination Grants Application Deadline: Through April 2015 or until funding is exhausted.
About: The Center for Service and Learning has designated funds for small dissemination grants between $500 and $750. These grants are available to support faculty and instructional staff in disseminating work associated with civic and community engagement in higher education, particularly work that builds the knowledge base related to service learning pedagogy, community-university partnerships and community-based participatory research/collaborative inquiry.

L'Oreal USA for Women in Science Fellowship Program
The L'Oreal For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations. More than 2,000 women scientists in over 100 countries have been recognized since the program began in 1998.
The L'Oreal USA For Women In Science fellowship program will award five post- doctoral women scientists in the United States this year with grants of up to $60,000 each. Applicants are welcome from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics. Completed applications are due no later than March 20, 2015.
