Curriculum Enhancement Grant Symposium

Held to honor and celebrate the successes of the 2013 Curriculum Enhancement Grant (CEG) awardees, the 2014 CEG Symposium will feature a keynote address on Calibrated Peer Review®: Not Just Writing in the Discipline by Arlene Russell, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Department of Education, UCLA. Calibrated Peer Review® is a web-based instructional program that allows instructors to use writing-to-learn pedagogy in classes of any size. A drawing for five free copies of the book Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, a reception and poster presentations by 2013 CEG recipients will follow the keynote address.

Attending the CEG symposium is especially recommended to faculty who may be interested in submitting proposals for CEG funding in the future, but all faculty are encouraged to attend.

Conveying Messages with Graphs

What's the right graph for your data? How can a chart help to convey your message?
Although widely used in research to analyze and communicate data, graphs and charts are often poorly mastered by researchers. Based on Dr. Jean-luc Doumont's popular book, Trees, Maps, and Theorems, this workshop will provide attendees the skills needed to:
• Select the appropriate type of image for a given data set and research question
• Optimize a graph's layout to reveal a study's outcomes
• Write a caption that is useful for the researcher and reader
Dinner will be served from 5:15pm-5:30pm. The presentation will begin promptly at 5:30pm.
About Jean-luc Doumont:
An PhD in applied physics from Stanford University and engineer from the Louvain School of Engineering, Jean-luc Doumont now devotes his time and energy to training doctors, scientists, business people, and other rational minds in effective communication, pedagogy, statistical thinking, and related themes. Composing and delivering lectures with student needs in mind, however, can help to increase student engagement and content retention. This online mini-workshop will offer ideas and considerations for creating lectures that help students achieve learning goals, with time for questions and discussion.
Quality Matters: Applying the QM Rubric, 5th Edition

Indiana University has subscribed to Quality Matters (QM) as a tool and process for the design, development, and ongoing review of online courses, especially those that are part of the IU Online initiative.
This workshop will introduce faculty and staff to the QM Rubric and Process, sharing best practices for online course design. The QM Rubric is a research-based set of standards that can be used during the course design process. The QM Process is a peer review process that eventually will be used to review many IU Online courses, with the goal of achieving QM Recognition for mature online courses in the near future. Also, this workshop is the pre-requisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is the required course to become a QM Peer Reviewer.
This workshop will be offered at IUPUI face-to-face from 9am until 4pm, with occasional breaks. Participants will have one hour for lunch, and are free to bring their own lunch or take advantage of the many options in the IUPUI Campus Center. To receive the QM certificate of completion for this workshop, participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop.

Classroom assessment techniques provide faculty with feedback on what, how much, and how well their students are learning. Instructors can use this feedback to modify their teaching to improve student learning. Students can use it to learn more effectively. In this online mini-workshop session, participants will learn how to implement the “minute paper,” “muddiest point,” “think-pair-share,” and other quick ways to assess and enhance learning. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

Using rubrics increases grading transparency, consistency, and efficiency while encouraging students to link assignments to learning objectives and become more critical assessors of their own work. However, many faculty feel that creating a rubric and using it effectively requires time and effort that they cannot spare. In this online mini-workshop, participants will learn some basic principles for quickly creating effective rubrics that will make assessing student work faster, more consistent, and more rewarding. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.
Assessing Writing Assignments for Non-native English Speaking Students in Your Classes

Do you have international students and other non-native speakers of English in your class? Do you wonder how, without significantly increasing your workload, you can assess writing assignments in a manner that acknowledges the difficulty non-native speakers may have? The international population is growing by leaps and bounds, and faculty need to approach writing assessment in a way that acknowledges challenges of writing in a student’s second, third, or even fourth language. This workshop will define the typical difficulties non-native speakers of English may have with writing and will illustrate, with examples assessment tools, effective pedagogical solutions for assessing writing assignments in any discipline or course level.
Questions addressed in this workshop include:
• What is good student writing, and what is truly important when evaluating a student’s paper?
• Why do some students who have been studying English for a long time still make the same mistakes?
• What pedagogical techniques can be implemented in assessment without spending significantly more time than with native English speaking students?
The workshop will begin with a group reflection and discussion on perceptions of good writing and writing by non-native speakers of English. The presenters will involve the audience in analyses of student writing, alternating between small- and large-group discussion and presentation of content by the workshop leaders.
