This session will introduce basic concepts related to assessment in general, and online approaches and tools specifically. Participants will examine different types of student work and activities across disciplines, as well as examples of assessments that measure learning that ranges from remembering to applying to creating. Time for questions and discussion will follow at the end.

John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In addition to teaching at the University, he has authored numerous articles on mixed methods research, qualitative methodology, and general research design and 22 books(including new editions), many of which focus on types of research designs, comparisons of different qualitative methodologies, and the nature and use of mixed methods research. His books are translated into many languages and used around the world. He held the Clifton Institute Endowed Professor Chair for five years at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Engaged Scholars Roundtable: Work or Philanthropy? Examining How Faculty Spend their Time on the Job

Building from the notion that faculty give the gift of their time and expertise in many situations as part of their roles at colleges and universities, this roundtable session explores the amount of time faculty spend on activities that are charitable or altruistic at least in part. We will explore how much time faculty report spending on certain activities that have a philanthropic bent (e.g., research with undergraduates, working with undergraduates on activities outside of class, and informal interactions with students outside of class) and discuss faculty characteristics (e.g., race, ethnicity, rank, and field of study) that predict more time on these activities. We will discuss the implications of this work and consider ways to extend the work moving forward.

Showcase your work and contribute your expertise by submitting a proposal to present at the 10th annual IUPUI Robert G. Bringle Civic Engagement Showcase and Symposium (CESS) to be held on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014, in the Campus Center.
This year's theme is Healthy and Engaged Communities: Campus and Community Partnerships as Strategies to Support the Well-Being of Indianapolis and Beyond .
We are looking for fresh perspectives, great ideas, and lessons from the field. Share new ideas or highlight noteworthy projects, research and best-practices with IUPUI and the Indianapolis community who come to hear about your experiences, insights, and lessons learned and be inspired by your passion to improve the quality of healthy and engaged communities. Whether you are a seasoned presenter or submitting for the first time, you are encouraged to submit a proposal to present a workshop or poster, or host a peer group or roundtable session.
