Delivering Engaging Lectures with Clickers

This workshop will describe how Instructors can employ Student Response Systems (SRS) such as clickers to both promote active learning and gain critical feedback about student learning. Participants will have the opportunity to hear IUPUI Physics Professor, Andy Gavrin discuss how clickers are integrated into his teaching.

In this informative session, participants will be introduced to the student response system(SRS) supported by Indiana University called TurningPoint. Working within the SRS software, participants will do the following: build basic slides; facilitate presentations; generate reports; and incorporate best practices.

This session is part of the First Wednesday Brown Bag Series, which is designed to provide faculty with a forum to discuss common teaching challenges and to consider constructive, evidence-based solutions to those challenges. Each facilitated session is focused on a particular topic and designed for faculty with all levels of experience.

Electronic portfolio adoption is becoming mainstream, emerging as a field of practice with theoretical underpinnings and scholarly research. This workshop will introduce recognized elements of “folio [ePortfolio] thinking” in the context of university teaching and learning. Participants will discuss the ways ePortfolios are well suited to support and enhance engaged learning practices, general education outcomes, and integrative learning across disciplines and learning contexts. You’ll also learn about IU and IUPUI ePortfolio initiatives and about resources available to support your work with ePortfolios.

Discover how to deliver rich online assessments with the new Oncourse Testing tool. Participants will learn how to create question pools, import questions in bulk from text documents, import tests from the old Oncourse test tool, reduce the risk of academic dishonesty and more using the new Test tool. This is a hands-on workshop and participants are encouraged to bring digital versions of or have access to their existing assessments for experimentation.

Dr. Jamie Washington is a nationally known speaker and leader in higher education. He will be working with participants to identify ways to bring a more diverse perspective to their curriculum. This event is open to all faculty and staff of IUPUI.
